A Vanilla Oriental… without vanilla?

Imagine that you are in one of those beautiful and arid beaches in Greece… above you a scorching sun… the dry wind carries with it the smell of dry earth, dry flowers… the only thing that can keep you cool, besides the blue of the sky and the ocean, is the best vanilla ice cream that you’ve ever eaten (without vanilla eheheh):
The opening of Immortelle by Manos Gerakinis carries with it the soft and warm scent of a slightly sweet (brown sugar is not so sweet) and spicy (clove) cinnamon. The Queen of the ball (immortelle) enters a few seconds later: beautiful, regal but discrete as true royalty should be, ruling without imposing herself, moving with admirable grace and subtlety between her subjects. As she starts to dance, she is flanked by her escorts (santal and patchouli), warning us not to be fooled by her frailty. Her smile is warm, sweet, gentle, but with character.

A bit of everything

When I first smelt Immortelle at a friends house I thought it was absolutely stunning. I searched everywhere to buy it and no where had any stock. I’ve since found out it’s been discontinued. I was over the moon when I found one site selling a full bottle. I’m excited to be able to have this in my collection.

Immortelle to me this is a bit of everything. It’s a touch grown up gourmand, a little spicy and a little sweet. It’s totally unisex and smells great on everyone. It’s calming, comforting, warm and creamy with the notes of cinnamon, clove and milk. It actually reminds me of a Chai Latte. The fragrance is beautifully blended together, so no one note dominates over the other. This is a classy and sophisticated scent that could easily be dressed up or down. I would wear this out to a black tie event or relaxing on the sofa, wrapped in a blanket with a hot chocolate. It’s just such a gorgeous scent. Im so pleased I managed to get a bottle!

Interesting, but I don't like it

Today I chose (or rather, my husband blindly picked for me) Immortelle - a sample I got from a friend. For how intense the scent is out of the bottle and in the first minutes, it fades surprisingly quickly. I even asked my husband and he said he can't smell anything, and that was only after a couple of hours.
As for the aroma itself, it's not bad. There is a burnt sugar quality to it, but it's not exactly my cup of tea. It's simultaneously too strong at the start, too bitter throughout, somehow not balanced for my nose. I enjoy the scent out of the bottle, but not on the skin. It is an interesting gourmand.

The Fairy Tale of Sweet Porridge

The fairy tale "Of Sweet Porridge," recorded by the Brothers Grimm, goes something like this:
"Once upon a time, there was a poor, pious girl who lived alone with her mother, and they had nothing left to eat. So the child went out into the forest and met an old woman who already knew of her plight and gave her a little pot. It was to say: 'Little pot, cook,' and it would cook good, sweet millet porridge, and when it said: 'Little pot, stop,' it would stop cooking.
The girl brought the pot home to her mother, and now they were free from their poverty and hunger and ate sweet porridge as often as they wanted.
One day, the girl had gone out, and the mother said: 'Little pot, cook,' and it cooked, and she ate until she was full. Now she wanted the pot to stop, but she didn’t know the words. So it kept cooking, and the porridge overflowed and kept cooking, filling the kitchen and the whole house, and the second house, and then the street, as if it wanted to feed the whole world. And it was the greatest distress, and no one knew how to help. Finally, when only one house was left, the child came home and said: 'Little pot, stop,' and it stopped and ceased cooking, and anyone who wanted to go back into the city had to wade through it."
From my ancient fairy tale book in Fraktur script, likely much older than I am, the publisher's cover page with the imprint has disappeared.
However, I already feel after the second test, having been testing "Immortelle" by Manos Gerakinis, as if I had gorged myself on sweet porridge, feeling stuffed, and the abundance of sweet stuff makes me feel nauseous. Even as a child, I was disgusted while reading this fairy tale.
For back then, there were sometimes such milk soups, thickened and with strange spices, burnt milk and almost burnt caramel, which one used to make oneself, and where one could easily miss the right moment to stop cooking, then it smelled and tasted terrible.
Immediately after applying "Immortelle," I smell harmless patchouli. But the longer I wear "Immortelle," the more oppressively sweet it becomes. I perceive licorice and the almost never pleasant immortelle. Additionally, anise and/or fennel. I do not find cinnamon and clove; I do not miss them either.
However, on the scent strip, I can perceive some eugenol, and immortelle on the scent strip is peppery-sharper, less sweet.
But on my skin, the sweet porridge burns as well, bitter-smoky burnt caramel with milk poured over it makes "Immortelle" even sweeter. As if one wanted to neutralize and suppress the burnt smell of "Immortelle" with the sweetener aspartame. And I also smell resinous rosewood with its slight camphor scent.
This is presumably meant to somewhat neutralize the excessive sweetness.
It is all too much for me, and nothing makes "Immortelle" lighter. Additionally, it has good longevity with a medium sillage.
In contrast, "Aomassai" by P.G. is downright a delicious gourmand scent. Even that became too oppressively gourmand for me over time while wearing it.

Delicious!

A beautiful warm scent that smells like a warm cup of honey milk, refined with cinnamon, cloves, and anise. You immediately feel comfortable and at home. A hug in the form of a fragrance :)
I can tell the quality of the blend, very fine and elegant. I would love to try more fragrances from this house.
