Back to Crochet Doilies?

Sweating, quietly cursing the heat aunts with red faces, equipped with 4711 travel flacons, 4711 temple rollers, and 4711 refreshing tissues: Many associate the unmistakable, radiant metallic scent of this German institution with such or similar scenes. And depending on whether one cherishes this image in its Carl Spitzweg reminiscent, cheerful-melancholic basic mood, or turns away in disgust because one can already feel the damp tissue in the corner of their mouth ("Hold still, you have something there!"), it will likely determine whether "4711 - Echt Kölnisch Wasser" is met with goodwill or displeasure. Be that as it may, one thing is clear: Hardly any other fragrance is so saturated with "back then" as this one. Whether loved or hated: It is considered a grandma scent.

This must have also been the conclusion of the decision-makers at Mäurer & Wirtz a few years ago when they decided to rejuvenate the basic formula in modern remixes over the coming years and to free the brand somewhat from the stigma of being outdated and at best sentimental: Since 2017, there has been an annual "Remix," each focusing on a different core ingredient of a classic cologne. An attempt that can thus far be deemed successful! Particularly the 2018 Remix is considered by many (including myself!) to be a great hit and, alongside Ferrari's "Bright Neroli," one of the remarkable cologne variations of the decade. Notably, both fragrances have chosen orange as their olfactory focal point, a scent note that is not necessarily considered sexy but seems to resonate with the spirit of the times: Somehow delicious (i.e., "gourmand"), yet also fresh and almost serious. This fragrance also seemed to be quite successful: When I wanted to buy a bottle from Frau Konsalik last year, I had to sign up for a pre-order list (!!); according to the store staff, there were supply chain issues due to the enormous demand. Wow!

The 2019 version is objectively not as brilliant - but bolder! Because the only subtly fresh iris-lavender that defines my perception after a few minutes (where perceptions in the Parfumo community surprisingly diverge widely) is by no means straightforwardly modern, summery, or zesty. I would almost say: On the contrary! This fragrance is restrained, lavender-herbaceous, slightly dusty due to the rich iris, and in the base has a warm yet prickly spiciness that almost reminds me of oak moss [sic!]. It must be the sandalwood along with musk.

4711 here expresses itself in a way that is reminiscent of the old-fashioned, almost "English," and clearly places the Kölnisch-Wasser character in the background for this purpose (As mentioned: The iris!). As a declared lover of old and ancient scent signatures, I quite like it, but I doubt that this vintage will experience supply shortages as well. It's a pity, really! Whether 2020 will then bring the rosemary bomb remains to be seen. In any case, I look forward to more variations of this original!

Exactly. It doesn't have that pronounced Eau de Cologne "character." I don't think it's bad, but it's not "full bottle worthy."

I can't quite get into this one. I found the ones from 2017 and 2018 nicer, fresher - just more like a cologne for scorching summer heat.

It seems to me that I should take a closer look at the Remix series. Great comment.

Pre-order list! This is just like the Trabant! Until a few weeks ago, I had no idea these 4711 vintage editions existed. I have to give it a try. By the way, I'm also a fan of the original. If Berlin-Neukölln and Jägermeister have managed to become hipster-approved, then 4711 will too! Mark my words! ;-)

I thought last year's edition was great, fresh, and modern, but this year's version seems to suit me better. Maybe it's an age thing?!

I'm sure it will find its fans. I'm definitely one of them - even though, as I mentioned before, I only see it as a very limited variation of 4711. I'm really looking forward to the next variations; I expect a lot from the future remixes. Great comment - for that, you get: A trophy, what else!

You're right about that. It's not for fans of the newer 4711 variants, but rather for a specific clientele. One might almost be tempted to call it a connoisseur's composition from the house.
