The Smiling Dragon
From one of his business trips, my father brought me a precious kimono jacket - which I still cherish.
It is made of golden silk and intricately embroidered with cherry blossoms that entwine around a red dragon.
The pink flowers harmonize beautifully with the red of the dragon, which, despite its imposing presence, has a friendly face.
It seems as if it is smiling.
It does not have the fearsome quality that we attribute to it here in the Western world, but instead it appears strong - yet kind.
My father explained to me that the dragon has a completely different meaning in Asia - it represents luck, intelligence, and kindness.
I read exactly that from its artistically embroidered face.
And so the fragrance affects me in the same way.
It is light and flowing due to its floral components, but has a strong, calm core from the velvety red rose and the clear neroli.
Sandalwood wraps itself around me intimately - and the powdery note adds softness.
Musk gives the delicate fragrance a silky sheen - which brings us back to my golden kimono jacket.
I slip into it - and it provides me with a pleasant coolness.
I smile at my reflection - and the dragon smiles back.
