The next good one from the discount zone...

I recently got to know the Aigner brand - before the lockdown - at my regular drugstore, as I was on another exploratory journey through the so-called discount fragrances. I wasn't aware that it was an American house. Intuitively, I first thought of Switzerland, as the name sounds (for whatever reason) like it belongs to the beautiful Switzerland...

Be that as it may. You can definitely find really solid and quite decent fragrances under this brand for little money. I find the No.1 line, for example, very successful; all are pure, clean, and pleasant treasures without much fuss and other unnecessary nonsense. They smell fresh, smooth, soothing, and slightly synthetic. By the way, synthetic doesn't always have to be negatively connoted, as I believe there is also quite friendly synthetic that often resonates well with me and generally with the masses.
[...]

I gifted this Etienne Aigner No. 2 to my brother for Christmas, along with the shower gel and aftershave. Although he is not a huge perfume freak like his younger brother, he can now at least call 3(!) fragrances his own (He thinks I'm totally crazy for being registered here and owning more than 3 fragrances. And I just grin when he brings it up and think to myself "well, if you only knew what goes on here..." XD).
Well, since he is very skeptical about anything other than fresh and clean scents, I thought he might like it. To start with: He really likes the fragrance.

When I visited him over the Christmas holidays, he was wearing the EdT. And it smells or smelled wonderfully nice on him. Of course, I tested it on myself beforehand, but I only just decided to write a comment now.
[...]

The Etienne No. 2 is, by its basic character, an aromatic and spicy-fresh clean scent that I think would particularly appeal to those who are inclined towards so-called barbershop fragrances.
Right from the start, you experience this pleasant citrus-fresh tone, which is underlined by a nicely intense and spicy-peppery nutmeg. You really have to be a lover of this note, and I can imagine that for some, it might be too strong, but I personally find the beginning very masculine and attractive. I also detect a hint of herbal lavender, but this is really only rather subtle in the background.

Shortly thereafter, the fragrance becomes soapier and even slightly powdery in my perception. The pepper from the beginning takes a back seat and essentially leaves the stage to the soap. You smell as if you have just showered and freshly shaved. This remains essentially until the base, except for a minimal woody undertone that I additionally perceive.
[...]

Due to its character and composition, this fragrance definitely has the aura of a signature candidate, in my opinion. Personally, I would prefer to wear it in spring or autumn in everyday life or at work. I think especially during these mentioned seasons and occasions, it can fully unleash its potential and really shine.

For a fresh scent, it also impresses in terms of longevity. On my skin, I perceive it for a good 6-7 hours, and especially in the first 2 hours, it shows considerable strength before it gradually retreats gentlemanly.

Conclusion:
I went to my brother again yesterday and filled a 5ml decant of his fragrance, which I am currently wearing at home. I like it so much that it has a very good chance of moving into my collection sooner or later (at the latest in spring). Because for the little money, you get a fragrance that I consider to be of quite good quality, which leans towards one of my preferred directions.

For fans of clean-soapy and peppery men's fragrances, this classic is at least worth a try. Many probably already know it from their fathers, uncles, or grandfathers, if they haven't worn it themselves already. For me, however, it is a new discovery and, as a classic fan - almost logically - a wonderful fragrance.

And surely this one has also fallen victim to one or another reformulation, which I cannot judge since I only recently discovered it.

Reformulations aside - I really like it overall. And that’s what counts.

By the way, Etienne Aigner was founded in 1965 in Munich.

I haven't smelled that fragrance in ages, but the shower gel is really top-notch. Good brother :)

See, I didn't promise you too much, did I? A life without Aigner No 2 is possible, but not sensible! **Bücklings-Pokal** for you!!!

No question, it's a great scent. However, it was never for me because it always felt too soapy. I also wish my beloved Silver would come my way as a hidden gem. But that's never going to happen. It's treated like gold! By the way, very nice comment!.. ;)

Many years ago, Aigner fragrances weren't a bargain. You couldn't even find them in drugstores back then. It's strange, everything else, like handbags, is super expensive.

Yes, Salva, great stuff again and super enjoyable to read. I think I’ll take a closer look at the discount perfumes. Good doesn’t always have to be super expensive. I totally agree with you on that.

I can easily imagine the scent based on your description. The fact that it’s still around after almost 45 years speaks volumes about it. You could say it's a fragrance for the generations...

Your brother is right, like everyone who thinks we're crazy ;-) I actually find it more than charming that you spend more time in the lower segment; I too believe there are gems to be found there. But when it comes to synthetics, I can't agree. They usually bother me. Really enjoyed reading this again!

Thank you for your review! I have a hard time with **back stock**, you know, my back and all! It might be too soapy for me, but maybe I'll give it a try since it's available at every drugstore...

I really like it - and generally the direction - on men as well. My first boyfriend wore it back then, and the scent was already well-established by then (but probably not yet reformulated/end of the 80s).

Helpful comment that gives a great idea of the scent. There are two companies called "Aigner," both with the same roots. One is German, the other American. At some point, they "diverged," but they both use the same logo and produce fragrances alongside leather goods. A bit confusing!

Your fragrance description is wonderful to read, detailed, helpful, and personally inspired. Unfortunately, I don't feel well with the scent itself. I feel more comfortable elsewhere! However, your comment is great!

I really like it too - especially because of the 70s musk.

Your comment is great as always, but unfortunately, No. 2 wasn't really my thing. Maybe the G-man needs to knock on my door about a soap scent ;)

I know it from an uncle. My husband's uncle. And if he’s not wearing Aigner, he’s wearing Drakkar Noir. I always found it too soapy as well.

I think it's really beautiful too. My husband still has some old memory bottles - but unfortunately, he wears it way too rarely. Grasse from 'DerDuft' also goes in this direction as a new scent.

I agree with Yati. I couldn't get along with the scent either; all I could smell was soap and muffins. But not everything can be perfect. Still, you can find some gems among Aigner's older fragrances.

Yes, back then Aigner could still launch really good fragrances... including some classics like this one here :-)

I don't really know why I never got along with it, not even back when I first encountered it (in the '80s). I suspect it was always too much musk for me. But it's definitely a classic that's still available for a reason.
