Midlife Crisis in a Bottle
Love Hibiscus is, for me, a scent of midlife crisis. I know, that sounds negative at first, but I mean it as a compliment. Here, two worlds come together in a surprisingly harmonious way: youth and maturity, lightness and depth, designer appeal and a hint of challenging niche. And how does Amouage manage this balancing act?
At first, the fragrance takes me back to my youth, and I perceive a zesty passion fruit. A fresh love is in the air: sweet kisses under the starry sky of a tropical night, candy in my mouth. The skin still smooth and juicy like a hibiscus leaf.
But before the fruity carefreeness turns into sticky caramel, iris skillfully dusts off my wrinkles. It prevents the scent from drifting into teenage territory. The frankincense is very subtle and reminds me more of candle smoke than of oriental church bells ringing.
After about half an hour, maybe a little earlier, the hibiscus finally blooms: cranberry-like, clear as tea, and surprisingly full-bodied at the same time. And it is here that a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity is created for me, and Cupid's hibiscus-red arrow strikes me straight in the heart. Respect: no Amouage scent has achieved this so far.
The base feels almost a bit tame. Where is the cypriol? On the other hand, the vanilla smells high-quality, far removed from a clumsy instant vanilla that is currently used in so many designer fragrances.
Love Hibiscus is by no means boring. It has small edges and corners that make it interesting and unique. A scent for people who are no longer young, but have remained young at heart. A midlife crisis fragrance in the best sense, which I can also imagine on men.
