Memories of Serge and Christopher

No, these are not past loves. They are two high-profile perfumers who have their own fragrance label. To my knowledge, they do NOT work for Armaf, unless under a pseudonym. But can one be completely SURE about that?
Armaf also has its top talents, even if their names are not known.
This high-caliber fragrance proves that. It contains everything that defines a true Arab. A lot of exotic spices that remind one of a bazaar where you can find everything that has rank and name in the spice world. Of course, myrrh and incense are also included. Likewise, resins and woods worthy of a sultan.
The mention of "sultan" closes the gap in knowing what I am getting at, with one last building block. The "Armaf Niche Oud" IS basically the "Ambre Sultan" of the two perfumers. The latter is already a fragrance masterpiece in its own right, and Armaf's interpretation does not fall short in any way. The "original" Sultan is a bit sweeter and places more emphasis on the woods. The "Niche Oud" is resinous and smokier than its counterpart. If Sheldrake's and Lutens' fragrance is light brown, Armaf's perfume is dark brown with inlaid marquetry in all shades of brown.
For untrained noses, both may seem almost identical. For more experienced ones, the Armaf is a bit rougher.
In any case, you get a lot of fragrance for a pleasant purchase price!!

Beautiful and helpful statement. I've realized that I don't like the Armaf Oud scent. So I was spared from testing the Lutens, which I felt drawn to because of its name. Thanks for such insights. I can't pick out the Oud at all; I only smell a sour and resinous amber with a scratchy herbal note (tarragon, myrrh?) and a deep dark vanilla note.

For me, the Armaf Niche Oud is the "lighter" version of Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan...
