A Well-Kept Secret

Foreword:
How long have I waited to get my hands on you. Yesterday, I could hardly believe my eyes: The wonderful Sternenklar has fulfilled this dream for me. Thank you once again. If anyone has missed my fragrance stories, you have her alone to thank for that. Therefore, this is naturally dedicated to her.

Story:
Did you know that there was a time when humans and fairies were best friends? In the past, every child received not only a guardian angel at birth but also a good fairy by their side. And so it happened that Gari also got to know her ward. Gari loved to fly over lavender fields. Every time she carried her delicate wings over the purple sea, she brought her human child a few blossoms. The human child grew, and the bond between them became stronger and stronger. But there was turmoil in the heavenly realm. Humans became greedier, their wishes more selfish. The angels knew they had to act if they wanted to save the Earth. And so they flew over the blue planet, sprinkling their fine angel dust everywhere. The whole world was wrapped in a romantic white. The Ice Age had begun. The fairies were horrified by the decision, but most bowed to the great council and stopped helping humans.

Gari was a very gentle being, and she could not abandon her ward. She provided warmth, nourishment, and conjured up a few lavender blossoms whenever her powers allowed. The high council caught wind of this and clipped her magical wings. Gari was utterly unhappy; she had lost not only the lavender but also her beloved ability to fly. One day, the angel of sweet dreams appeared. Ashlemah knew that Gari's dearest wish was to soar into the skies again. She spread her wings and enveloped Gari in the finest angel dust, which surrounded her with a gentle iris scent, and as if by magic, powdery wings formed, lifting Gari back into the air.

Iris at its best

During the eagerly anticipated testing as part of a traveling package, this sample (just like the wonderfully beautiful bottle) immediately appealed to me visually because of the purple "gemstone" - and the same goes for the scent.
It is a multifaceted, balanced iris fragrance that will surely please many who enjoy such scents with its many facets.
In the top notes, both an ethereal, slightly herbal lavender and a zesty fruit juice note, caramel, powdery iris, and already the warm musk note emerge. It sounds like a lot at once, and it is, but it harmonizes beautifully. I have somewhat simplified the harmony between lavender and gourmand notes (in this case tonka bean) in "Twilight" by Lush.
I used to think that lavender was rather difficult to incorporate into a fragrance because of its distinct (though wonderful on its own) note... I only found a few fresh-spicy men's fragrances where this worked.
Here, however, one can tell that the different lavender notes (herbal, ethereal, caramel, warm, floral) have a "common denominator" with the notes of this fragrance (iris, gourmand notes, musk) and are further developed through them.
This iris fragrance does have a somewhat "snobbish," noble, doll-like facet, but due to the pleasant and warm musk notes, it becomes inviting overall.
On the other hand, the powdery note evokes associations with delicate baby powder; I would describe the colors of the fragrance as white to satin purple.
An iris-powder-tonka-gourmand gemstone that I will probably acquire in the summer in Nice at Galeries Lafayette, should I not manage to get a decant by then!
...the traveling package has thus found a victim :D

The Fragrance with Two Faces

One face is the first 15 minutes, during which lavender and dusty-dry iris have their fun. This does indeed remind me of Prada Infusion d'Iris, somewhat softened, or I would agree with Hannah (who has described the scent so perfectly) that the scent progression somewhat resembles Jersey by Chanel.
This first face will be quickly missed by one part of fragrance enthusiasts, while the other part, who prefers it more subtle, creamier, softer, and skinnier, like me, would rather skip those first 10 minutes. For that, I love the second face all the more. The fragrance becomes one of the most beautiful cream scents with slight powdery nuances that I have ever smelled. This is likely due to violets, heliotrope, and musk. You can recognize the master of their craft who developed this fragrance, or rather, the masteress. While the Nivea scent itself, or Blue by Wolkenseifen, or even Kind of Blue can become quite annoying at some point, this one remains beautifully skinnier, restrained, with ever so slightly fresh hints of lavender, but so minimal that it doesn't disturb; just like with Jersey in style, but distinctly different in scent.
A truly excellent fragrance that once again sparks a desire to purchase. I just don’t wear the first 15 minutes on me.

The Color Purple

So Bulgari now has an exclusive series as well. Bottles resembling black amphorae, adorned with gold rims and gemstones - striking, radiant, not exactly subtle, rather dramatic. Ashlemah means "sweet dreams" and is inspired by the amethyst, the symbol of perfect balance. Only four ingredients are listed in the fragrance created by Daniela Andrier: lavender, iris, violet, heliotrope.

Upon spraying, the herbal lavender note stands out distinctly and alone for a brief moment. It is aromatic and clear, but is already enveloped in the next moment by a dry, powdery, and somewhat earthy iris root. This is a combination that feels almost a bit aloof, similar to what I first perceived in Jersey. The interplay of lavender and iris appears elegantly restrained and slightly veiled.

However, the two delicate gray to light purple, broken nuances do not remain alone for long, and a strong violet rushes forward, momentarily mixing in a bit too dominantly into this discreet interplay and takes the lead role with elbow arguments. By no means is it "the violet in the moss, modest, demure, and fine," but rather a spicy one, with leaves, stem, and stalk, delicately bitter, leathery, and with a slight licorice accord. For a good while, it makes quite a fuss until a balancing veil of musk gently reins in the forward little plant, puts it in its place, and appeals to its team spirit. Now Ashlemah becomes calm, unexcited, grounded.

The somewhat combative opening is just a short episode of about 15 minutes. Under the supervision of musk and heliotrope, Ashlemah becomes significantly milder and softer, and the violet performers no longer want to be soloists but harmonize as a team. Heliotrope is used subtly. It adds little sweetness but relaxes the initially quite strong fragrance, balances it out, and leads it back into a calm, gray-matt-blue-light-purple course. Now it is a wonderful scent just to my liking, and this relaxed mood lasts until its gentle fading after many hours. I perceive - if one disregards the relatively intense violet phase - a similarity to the iris-powdery lavender note in Jersey, even though the latter develops as a whole still more delicately vanilla-like than Ashlemah.

I would classify the fragrance as feminine to unisex, the longevity is decent, and the sillage is rather close to the body. Suitable for adults.

Even though I would have preferred the violet note to be more subdued and the lavender to be a bit less fleeting: Ashlemah is a beautiful fragrance with a delightfully soft-powdery base that is definitely worth testing. It is neither fashionable nor mainstream and avoids the overly common characteristics of fruity, sweet, gourmand, oudy, or oriental. For that alone, Bulgari deserves respect.
