It is the smell of Hell's brimstone if Hell had a smell
No, no, no... I'm kidding you. 1881 Signature is so damn good!
To be frank, as an EDP concentration I expected higher longevity and huge projection, which did not happen and that disappointed me a bit. Nevertheless, reapplying the scent more times lets me revisiting over and over again the intriguing and obscure leather accord, and that compensate that lack. It is all about soft and spicy leatheriness.

1881 Signature bottle evokes the original one, this time the numbers are engraved in the opaque black back while the rest is crystalline, thought the scent is not a flanker, yet a brand new spicy, coppery, and dark leather scent. It opens up with bitter juicy grapefruit, topped with freshly grated nutmeg and a tad of spicy black peppercorn. The cypress is not over-topping but gives a balsamic and calming effect to the scent.

Well, the initial whiff is a bit boozy, but then it moves onto a blend of oriental notes of green cardamom, pitchy labdanum, and extraordinary obscure and tanned leather. The leather in here is full of darkness, loud, rough, it is the idyllic smell of Hell's brimstone if Hell had a smell, a kind of freshly made black asphalt with the liquid hot tar turning into the solid pitch. I am not saying it smells bad at all, rather the enigmatic leather is intoxicating and sublime! Weird enough, birmstone is a component that doesn't easily conform to one's idea of something pleasant, less alone fragrant. Yet believe me, at this stage the scent is really enjoyable and a real compliment getter, a kind of leather I have never smelt before.

The leather accord stays longer in the background before the scent begins spreading oriental notes of fumy vetiver, woody pepper tree, mild patchouli, and smooth amber.

The fusion of the aforementioned notes creates a warm aroma that gives it best during cold weather, late autumn and winter are perfect times for wearing it. Most people will prefer it for clubbing, dates, and nights out, however, I am wearing it since this morning and nothing was wrong with it. Elegant, bold, and modern, 1881 Signature is ideal for dudes in their late 20 and over.

Have fun,
Elysium

Leather + cardamom = Bad
My first association when trying this was that a big part of it smells exactly like CH Men Prive. They have leather and cardamom in common, and this combination smells wrong to me (I like leather and hate cardamom). If I were to describe it, it smells like hot black leather seats in a car left in the sun, a tiresome and unpleasant impression.

1881 Signature and Men Prive could be flankers of the same fragrance. If you like one, you'll like the other, and vice versa. Performance of Signature is a little weaker and it's probably bleaker and blander, but generally has the same DNA.

The little Gucci Guilty Absolute should be picked up in the children's department..
..his big brother 1881 Signature will surely pick him up there! Now that's what I call a "like a phoenix from the ashes," because after the 127 different 1881 flankers, I would have expected nothing, zero, niente from the brand. Discovered by chance a few weeks ago at Rossmann, I was already quite taken with it, and today I sprayed it again for verification, the same result!
Signature is a wonderful autumn and winter fragrance that greets me at the beginning with spicy pepper and sweet-spicy cardamom; it smells delicious and especially high-quality from the start. But the twist of this fragrance is that it reverses the usual and very typical progression for mainstream scents. Many fragrances in this price range, including flankers of good scents, start off quite interestingly, lay an intriguing top note over the (well-known) base theme, promise more than they can deliver, and then end up showing the unkillable tonka syrup again (a good example is YSL La Nuit L'Intense with its grandiose iris top note!).
Here it is exactly the opposite; first, there's a wintry sweetness, albeit subtle, but well noticeable, as the vanilla amber also seeps through a bit, but then the fragrance quickly turns into a bitter-spicy and masculine scent. This is thanks to the powerful wild leather accord and the cellar-free patchouli. There’s no sign of the usual synthetic penetrance to be found anywhere, which I had expected in this price range, thinking that at 39€ there would be a big catch at the end, nope, it doesn’t!!!
The spicy-earthy leather-patchouli base smells simply seamless and doesn’t have to hide from more expensive fragrances. I would even go so far as to say, see my statement on this fragrance, that if this scent were labeled with a chic niche brand and equipped with a more valuable bottle, it would receive absolutely the highest accolades. It gets that from me as well, because another brand would have to show me how to create such a wonderful and high-quality fragrance for 40€. The longevity is also completely okay at 6-7 hours, the sillage is strong but not in the typical sugary extent or like one might know from Montale. This is another plus point, not a simplistic crowd-pleaser for the village disco that tries to compensate for lack of quality with sillage. Also, no "I knew it!" or "couldn't be any other way!" at the end...everything va bene così!!
Long story short, Signature may not become my new signature scent, as I don’t have one anymore, but it earns the golden medal in this price category (and even in some above it!) and will surely be purchased in the autumn.

Gucci Guilty Absolute, semi-dry
Gucci Guilty Absolute was one of the most surprising releases for me in 2017. I still didn't buy it. Why? I had a lot of trouble during my testing sessions with it. No one else could really appreciate it, and many even found it unpleasant. You can certainly argue about who a perfume is for. I don't need to please everyone, but standing out negatively is not my goal either.

The references to this scent here piqued my curiosity. Above all, the comment from DaveGahan101, whose nose seems to be reliable. I can wholeheartedly agree with his observations. For me, it is a significantly more accessible version of Gucci, one could also say a smooth Gucci Guilty Absolute, built in a semi-dry manner.

At the center lies a comparable leather-patchouli core that dominates from start to finish. In contrast to Gucci, this one is accompanied in a much more elegant manner. Right from the start, there is a beautiful pepper-citrus opening, which is then seamlessly replaced by a smooth, balanced sweetness. Nevertheless, 1881 Signature never veers towards gourmand territory. In the dry down, the fragrance impresses again with a wonderful resinous-smoky twist. Smells more expensive than it is. Very chic!

All of this has of course nothing to do with 1881. And it doesn't reinvent the wheel. Nor does it need to. In the current mainstream - especially in the lower price segment - it definitely holds a special position. The bottle is okay, the content is great, the price is excellent. All in all, a fantastic autumn and winter fragrance for little money and with good performance. Price-performance tip!

Spicy Drugstore Leather from the Motorcycle Club
Recently, I had this interview with Schorschi, the chairman of the biker club Enno-Riders. I knew about his passion for perfume, and he agreed to introduce us to the wild biker perfume life. As I read on Parfumo, Dark Rebel by John Varvatos would surely be his scent, an allegedly real pub-biker-you-wouldn't-have-seen scent.
So we arrived at the clubhouse at the agreed time, with a butcher's cleaver dressed in leather hanging on the roof of the shed as a symbol on the flag. Impressive, I thought. In front of the shed, we saw a man with long hair, which noticeably thinned out, just getting off his scooter. I asked in astonishment: “Schorschi, is that you?”
The man turned around: “Uh...well, yes, that's me. My Harley is in the shop right now, not that you think I ride one of those things!”
I looked him up and down. “Oh, I see...my leather pants are in the wash and the missus hasn't done them yet. I’m just saying: stubborn stains. Well, anyway, I only had the green-purple suit made of nylon left.”
“.....let's just go inside and talk, Schorschi.”
There, I confronted him directly with the Dark Rebel: “all nonsense! Johnny Varvatos is just a pretentious biker! Just the rum and the high-end leather are nothing at all, only hipsters and bankers imagine bikers like that! Let me tell you what a biker perfume is for me, and that’s not from the drugstore! The 1881 Signature from that Italian.”
“Now I'm surprised, Schorschi. So cheap, and what can it do?”
“Of course it’s affordable, everything goes for the Harley and beer! You think we have money for Tommy Ford and his 300 Euro bottles? Yeah, the Cerutti is what Varvatos wishes he could be! They are similar, but one is all about the bar, the other you can actually wear!”
“What makes the 1881 Signature stand out for you?”
“No sweet note, we’re not...sweets lovers, I’ll say. So what I smell first is spiced cypress, directly accompanied by this leather. But it’s not smoky leather; it’s more like beautiful new leather without being harsh.”
“Don’t you like smoky leathers? That surprises me.”
“Hey, it’s enough if we smoke, the perfume doesn’t need to do that too, right? Anyway, it’s very intense at first and then underlined by cardamom, which gives it a strong and intensely aromatic note. The intensity decreases over time; by then, you really have to like this kind of leather accord.”
“Sounds very nice to me, does it stay that way?”
“Of course. With vetiver, patchouli, you won’t conjure up any fluffy base notes, kid! It remains earthy, spicy, and rather dark. I’d say: John is the guy who wears his leather jacket in the city. The Cerutti is more for the bars at night. Just like me. If the jacket wasn’t also in the wash. Got it?”
“Sure, Schorschi, it was very enlightening. Do your guys wear the 1881 Signature too?”
“Of course! They have to! They all diligently bought the stuff. Only Paul, he got it wrong. I’ll say: freesia, violet, mimosa, and jasmine...you have to be able to wear that.”

Bit harsh/polarizing at the opening. I can smell some anis. After the drydown suprisingly tolerable dark/smokey/leather smell with light sweetness

The leather in here is dark, loud, rough, it is the smell of Hell if Hell had a smell, a kind of freshly made black asphalt, very hot pitch!

A really nice spicy/leather perfume with only a moderate performance. It's an EDP - it should be stronger. A disappointment for me.

Very nice smoky leathery scent. Its roughness is moderated by a slight sweetness. Not the best performance ever. Very nice bottle.

Opens with a sharp leather and a high dose of spices. Turns to a moderately sweet amber. Not a great performer suited for cold seasons.
