Keep your head cool.
A summer scent that doesn't catapult me to Italy or even the Caribbean by the shortest route, can open my doors. Sure, oranges and basil don't exactly grow on the Atlantic coast, but on the way from Paris to Deauville your head is blown free. The playful sides of Mediterranean Dolce Vita fragrances are missing here and this is very good for the fragrance. The fragrance lets you breathe deeply and remains serious.

The elegance one encounters in exclusive seaside resorts is something I recognize. There is no padding or spilling here, but it is used in a well-dosed manner and there is even a little understatement. I feel the scent cool and with it I deliberately separate it from "fresh". This is not a typical refreshing fragrance, but I would rather place it in Dior's "Escale" line if you want to make a comparison. I also assume that the makers at Chanel had similar intentions when they commissioned the three new fragrances.

Paris-Deauville shows that it is possible to create an elegant summer fragrance with just a few ingredients, without appearing minimalist or even banal. I like that very much and still I miss a little hook, a corner, a smile, a little extravagance. I'd like to wear it if I got it for free. But I don't have to buy it extra, especially since I'm afraid that the price isn't good enough to take it with me in passing.

With regard to the Chanel range, however, I can say: something like this was missing - and I'm glad that Chanel is still able to create perfumes without serving the LVEB rail. Bravo Olivier Polge! Now, of course, I am curious about the other two fragrances of the series.

In the 1920s with the classic car to the French coast - puristic, clear, green, beautiful.
Somehow the light, redundant scents suit me more and more. After I had the new, pleasant "Sauvage" from Dior under my nose, the blind purchase of the new Chanel niche water "Paris-Deauville" was also a "may stay" experience.

The distance between both places as namesakes made me think first of vintage cars, which were perhaps in the 1920s, occupied with love couples on the escape from the metropolitan summer heat, towards Normandy and its wild, cooling coast on the way. Pure nostalgia!

The impression fits perfectly, this beautiful unisex refresher indeed offers an extremely pleasant, slightly sour, green and cautiously wiry aroma spectrum.
Probably only the two aromas above, undoubtedly much fresh, herbaceous basil, mixed with a slightly bitter, marginally sweet orange or rather its skin.

This may please and shines in a rather puristic kind of beauty, which has been arranged very sensitively and skillfully by Polge. One can already imagine how the lady and the gentleman of the world, possibly Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn, rising from the classic car and having the cool, rough sea in Deauville in front of their noses, drawing such an unobtrusively stylish and fresh green scent behind them, may have reached their vanishing point. Pretty.

The land where the oranges bloom?
There are no oranges in Normandy. What was Chanel or Olivier Polge thinking? Did we somehow confuse Normandy with the Midi? Basil is not a typical Norman herb either. Normans traditionally season with salt, pepper and garlic. Garlic in a perfume would certainly not do well. Cooking is done with apples (cider, calvados) and apples grow all over rural Normandy. Besides, you cook with strips of bacon and crème fraîche, which wouldn't do so well in a perfume. I lived there for thirteen years (I must now spontaneously think of the picture of the long-haired white dog among sheep, "Day 33 they still haven't noticed anything"). I've already been to Paris (urine smell in the metro, otherwise car exhaust fumes), I've also been to Deauville (usual algae smell on the beach).

After this certainly too long preface, now to the fragrance itself:
There's a top note and it's very citric-fruity. At first reminded me of "Afshan", but is not soapy. The orange comes out very nicely. In a few minutes (3-5) it is first incredibly afshanig, then (fortunately only) briefly synthetic päh like detergent, then greenens the basil. And it stays citrus green until it fades. Unfortunately, it fades too quickly and could have more projection in my opinion. It's just an eau.

When to wear: On Chanel's website I read, Paris - Deauville should remind of Gabrielle Chanel's boutique in Deauville in 1913. There is a nice short film by Karl Lagerfeld with Keira Knightley about Gabrielle Chanel's boutique. 1913 in Deauville means luxury, elegance, horse racing, oldtimer (at that time rather newtimer), straight lines, transparent light, bright clothes, hats, eccentricity. I could imagine that Paris - Deauville would match a lady in a light dress from that year and also an elegant young man in his newtimer. You can carry it to the horse race and on the big promenade in front of the hotels. I think when you return to Paris (by train), the magic is gone. Spraying in Deauville and on arrival in Paris, the perfume evaporated (then about 5 hours, now a little over 2 hours). Of course, you don't go to Deauville in winter. Mainly in summer, but also spring is nice in Normandy. I'll go soon and maybe take Paris - Deauville with me.

With the Cabrio to Normandy
Paris - Deauville is the 1st of the 3 new Chanel fragrances (which seem to be thematically related to seaside resorts) I wanted to test. I didn't know anything about Deauville except it's in the rough Normandy. Therefore, I knitted an explanation for the somewhat blatant, petrol head note together in my head: Old convertible, Grace Kelly loolalike with headscarf and oversized sunglasses, on the way to a day at the sea, with everything that goes with it: oysters, champagne, horse racing and green oranges. Green oranges? Yes, the fresh, citric scent that forms the heart note here must come from somewhere. And the weather in Deauville is not as friendly as in Biarritz (3rd fragrance), there the citrus fruits do not ripen so dolle.
Nevertheless, the fragrance also has something Mediterranean, probably from basil. A herbal note supports the fruity freshness, which is almost like wind with the hood open, on the route to Deauville. The base of the fragrance is somewhat calmer, chillier, the freshness goes to sleep and only a sweet tangerine hint remains. Very noble for a summer scent. Packing slightly understated, but reasonably priced. Medium durability. Nevertheless - worth a try, surprisingly "different".

A great summer scent - also for men
Of the three, I like this one best. Biarritz flew away after less than an hour and smells only like Zirtus. Venise is also beautiful, but it is a very soft fragrance and is too feminine for me. Deauville is really unisex, but the basil note really sets it apart from the mainstream scents. I think the Sillage/projection is best of the three. Durability is with me approx. 4 hours, which is ok for a smell which should have been actually an Eau de Cologne. Some people think the price is too high, I don't think so. Depending on where you buy, you can spend a lot more on 100ml N5 L'Eau. Here you get a fragrance that not everyone has, yet still speaks for style and class. Light enough to wear in leisure time, classic enough to wear in the office/formal as well. Only in the evening I'd go for something heavier. If you can trust the rumors Chanel will release 3 more Eaux, I'm really looking forward to it :-)

Got this at the beginning of the summer, and it has been my absolute favorite this year. Perfect for warmer to hotter days.

Freshly squeezed lemon, slightly tart, orange juice and the astringency from the basil. Fresh, herbaceous green, floral, bright and elegant.
