Chanel Les Eaux are the type of fragrances that suit me. Reduced and wearable, yet not ordinary. My undisputed favorite is Deauville, which is not only a fresh summer scent but also my symbol of understated elegance. Citrusy fragrances are often associated with Mediterranean joie de vivre, while Deauville reflects the rugged beauty of the Normandy coast. Herbaceous and herbal. Wonderful! The other Les Eaux also resonate with their names, and what they all have in common is a skilled simplicity that does not tip into the banal.
How does Chanel Paris fit into this? The advertising photo shows the simple bottle with light pink liquid against the backdrop of a clear and cool Parisian morning by the Seine. The sky is bright blue. Does the scent correspond to this image?
Paris is far from being as clear and bright as the morning in the advertisement. The fresh citrus notes immediately flash, and the pepper tingles in the nose, but almost simultaneously, the rose is present, and its petals may once have been rosy, but now the dust of the city has cast a fine veil over them. This gray-pink is quite charming, but it also takes away some of its brilliance. It is the dust of life that patchouli lays over it, creating a modern chypre-like note. Perhaps it is the fine sand dust blown from the chestnut-lined paths in the Tuileries, or perhaps it comes from the alleys of the Quartier Latin. The result is nonchalant, not dirty.
Citrusy notes, rose, and patchouli harmoniously blend in the style of an Eau. Light, but not really light-footed, rather mature and a touch melancholic. In this, it resembles Eau Capitale by Diptyque, which is more intense, fuller, and somewhat softer in comparison. Portrait of a Lady also has this interplay of citrus, rose, and patch, but it is much more complex and in a strict and almost commanding form.
Paris does not undergo any significant scent development. The fragrance has no sweetness, no heaviness, and feels cool. The longevity is quite good for an Eau, but the sillage is low. I see it as more feminine, but not exclusively so. Due to its melancholic side, it is not a fresh summer scent; on the other hand, its cologne-like lightness and citrus splashes do not quite predispose it for the cold season either. Therefore, the bright advertising photo does not entirely match reality for me. The scent leaves me with a gray-pink impression. Paris in the morning gray, the transition between day and night, just before sunrise, but still with a first flash of pink in the sky. The cool mood of the photo is accurate. When and where will I wear it? Since Paris and I have not been friends for long, we may still need to find our way. It is definitely worth a try.
