Gothic Love Triangle
What It Is: Secular incense, oud, and polished black leather. If "The Phantom of the Opera" were a fragrance, this is it - a dashing young count and a disfigured musical genius fighting over an ingenue soprano in 19th century Paris. Morillas might be best known for citrus soap freshies like Acqua di Gio and Versace Pour Homme, but this is a masterclass in artistic perfumery, opening with a puff of mace(?), then quickly plunging into a very pure incense (no churches or hippies here!) smoldering off of thick leather. There's an oud accord that sweetens things up, but the overall impact is unrelenting density, power, and utter brilliance for the next 6+ hours.
Who It's For: You love incense, but they're always too sour, too sweet, or too smoky. You understand that 1 spray of this beauty is enough, 2 is excessive, 3 might be deadly, and 4 could possibly usher in Ragnarok. You're likely 35+ and arch-confident in your tastes. Leans heavily masculine, but I can see *many* women wearing this during sweater season.
Alternatives: Encre Noir A l'Extreme is the closest for pure incense; Lorson is more restrained and tethers the incense with vetiver, not leather, but it's outstanding. Diptyque's L'Eau Trois is a more ancient, herbal incense and Oud Palao buries the incense with the oud/rose combo (if that's your thing). For leather, Tom Ford Tuscan Leather (tannery vibes) and John Varvatos Dark Rebel Rider (barstool) come to mind, but both are dirtier and less refined.
For me, Black Incense Malaki was the shocking end of a 8mo journey looking for incense and leather fragrances - and finally finding both, unexpectedly, combined into one. I rarely smile the first time I smell a fragrance, but this was a home run.
