I spent about two years going back and forth between this and Aesop Hwyl. They occupy very similar territory, and every time I sampled one I’d start reconsidering the other. Then, a few months ago, my wife and I spent a weekend at our favorite spa and something finally clicked. Hinoki won.
This has since become my “spa day fragrance.” Not literally—I’m not wearing perfume into the sauna—but when I want to return to that mental space, this does it almost instantly.
Super-dry woods, conifers, eucalyptus or something like it, and a wonderfully camphoraceous, almost mentholated coolness. I have no idea what actual hinoki wood smells like, so I won’t pretend otherwise. What I get is the smell of hot timber and cool vapor: somewhere between a dry sauna and a Turkish bath.
Clean, minimalist, sober, elegant. Performance is modest, and I’m perfectly happy with that. Something this meditative would lose part of its charm if it announced itself across a room or overstayed its welcome. It stays close, creates an atmosphere rather than a spectacle, and somehow that restraint feels entirely appropriate. Very Japanese, I suppose. My wife loves it on me. So do I.
