Fainting at the Creed Counter
Almost fainted at Neiman's Creed counter again yesterday. It wasn't really the fragrances. The first time was when Creed Aventus for Her arrived and I rushed over without breakfast. This time I hadn't eaten lunch and, as usual, I'm constitutionally unable to leave Neiman's perfume department in anywhere close to a reasonable timeframe. Arrival: 1 pm. Departure: about 6. What was I doing? Smelling perfume, testing it, discussing perfume, sharing perfume pics and stories. (You've heard the one about how Jean Harlow's husband, Paul Bern, killed himself drenched in Mitsuoko, her favorite perfume, which she was never able to wear again after that?) Well, by the time I realized I was about to faint, it was too late to get to a restaurant. I wouldn't have made it. Luckily, Creed people keep little bags of cookies for just such emergencies. All told I needed four bags. On to the review.

In spite of the cookies, when the Creed sales clerk sprayed this on the back of my hand, I almost fainted again. What a perfection of Lavander and the fabulously delicious top note. I'm wearing it now. The bad new is that ten minutes in, Aberdeen Lavander's splendid top notes die an early death, leaving a respectable muddle of flower, wood, leather and vetiver. Warning. Do not stay long at a perfume counter, talking about Jean Harlow, or you are likely to buy something(s). Should I have bought this one? No. I don't like Lavander but my mom wore it so I'm always in search of a perfume with a Lavander blend I can wear. This fits the bill, but only for the first ten minutes.

I don't regret the purchase, though, because five hours of happiness at a perfume counter staffed by clerks who not only know perfume, but all the stories, too, and who keep you alive with cookies, is worth it.

P.S. Actually, rumor has it that Paul Bern was murdered by his unbalanced and jealous ex-girlfriend. When Harlow's butler called the studio (instead of the police), they decided that a suicidal, rather than a murdered, husband was better for her career.

Oriental Lavender
That the masters of Lightness can release a heavy, oriental blockbuster is hard to imagine, and Aberdeen Lavender has not become that either. But still, it is significantly denser, richer, and heavier than the average of the brand. Without a doubt, it is a lavender scent - with a very cool oriental twist.

AL starts deliciously, yet still somewhat old-fashioned: perfectly balanced lavender - green, purple, viscous, fine, slightly menthol/alcoholic like absinthe, not stinky. Then it takes a journey, gradually moving more and more towards modernity and the Orient. The scent does not become edible or overly sweet, and the lavender remains the backbone of the fragrance. However, a lot happens over the course of 5-6 hours. It simply becomes more beautiful, blossoms. I have less and less idea of when I would wear it and how I would categorize it - but its beauty still lingers. This twist is mainly thanks to the patchouli, the leather, and the green vetiver grass, which skillfully maintains the connection to the lavender.

Bottle: smooth 2
Sillage: also in a good range.
Longevity: one of the longest-lasting Acqua Originale - 6-7 hours.

Conclusion: for those who find the hard-to-get classic Royal Scottish Lavender by Creed too old-fashioned or simply can’t find it anywhere - they have found an extremely interesting, powdery-oriental alternative from modern times here!

A Fragrance for the Scottish Country Gentry
A generous sample of this fragrance arrived with Mamski's lavender hiking package. Had I read the fragrance pyramid beforehand, I would have probably set it aside as "not for me." Absinthe, patchouli, leather, and vetiver would have deterred me in combination. However, on a whim, I sprayed Aberdeen Lavanda on my skin without a prior "ingredient check" - thankfully.

My first association is a mild lavender liqueur with a slight green spiciness and menthol note. Not bad, but I would have preferred that in a glass rather than on my skin. Shortly thereafter, a lovely citrus note joins in - the kind that makes you think absolutely nothing of cleaning products. The green spiciness from the opening now reveals itself as rosemary, while the menthol note recedes to skin level (where it remains for quite a while).
Slowly, a non-sweet powdery note creeps in, initially a bit restrained, but becoming significantly more present with the blooming of the heart note. The flowers that serve as supporting actresses to the lavender are finely woven and never push themselves to the forefront, instead bringing something soft to the fragrance without dominating it.
Patchouli (together with the vetiver?) provides a damp, earthy touch, with no trace of mustiness in sight. The subtle leather note makes me think of fine, well-worn leather boots that get dampened by dew during a morning walk in the countryside.
Overall, I primarily smell a powdery and distinct lavender note. Closer to the skin, it shows a slightly herbaceous spiciness, but remains harmonious and light.

With Aberdeen Lavanda, I think of elegant country chic and refined understatement. I find it rather cool, fitting for a late summer or early autumn morning. Scientist wrote that the fragrance would suit the Scottish Highlands - I agree.
I perceive it quite well on myself - only after about three hours does it pull back a bit and remains well detectable on the skin for another two to three hours.

In hindsight, I am glad I sprayed it "unknowingly." Maybe I should do that more often. Aberdeen Lavanda won't be a wish list candidate for me - it's a bit too "sophisticated" for that - but I appreciate this testing opportunity. Thank you, Mamski!

no stingy Scot
In my circle of friends, there are two Scots, a gentleman and a lady, whom I got to know independently of each other.

Both are characterized by kindness and humor - but that changed when I told them about the saying of the "stingy Scot."
They reacted unusually indignant.

Yes - the Scots love to drink whiskey and enjoy dancing - but stinginess?
No, that is something they would deny vehemently.

And the fragrance Aberdeen does not skimp on its charms - in a very refined old school way.

He is the gentleman of the old school, entering the hospitable house with lavender bouquets and rose arrangements.
Very chivalrous and touchingly nostalgic.
I gladly throw open doors for such a gallant.

The Highland knight carries the lily and the tuberose in his coat of arms, and pays me court in a most perfect manner.
Love letters written in ink on perfumed laid paper flutter into the house - and my romantic heart flutters like a dove as well.

This sir is as stylish as his white horse - and he is not ashamed of his feelings.
Yet he has wit and verve - and can also bravely wield the saber.

Admittedly - a species of man that is endangered - but Creed brings this one back from obscurity with this fragrance.

Cotton Ball and Pin Cushion
IT SEEMS to be a particularly tender and cuddly fragrance, this Aberdeen Lavender. The impression is unavoidable. Delicate citrus and rosemary breezes seem to waft around the nose. Once. And then again and again. Like a soft, fluffy ball.
But wait! In between, there is something to pay attention to. After some wear time, you encounter something that was not to be expected. Hidden within the silk-covered cotton ball are some pins. The heads are so deep inside that they cannot be guessed from the outside. Only when you press down a bit harder do you notice the sharp ends. A quick "Ouch!"... then caution!
This seems to characterize this beautiful fragrance. The lily and the tuberose are those little needles that are hidden in the soft cushion. Every now and then, a small prick. But as soon as you let go again (thanks to the lavender and the earthy soft patchouli), everything is soft and cuddly once more. Until the vetiver makes its entrance. The rough blades of the sweet grass provide very fine stings again. As if you were almost invisibly edging a hem with a long hair.
And yet the fragrance is a fine one, sometimes cooler, sometimes warmer. And a delicate one... but speckled with those very needles!

Lavender green, lavender blue. Once I'm king, you'll be my queen. The children's rhyme fits. Authentic, subtly bitter, majestic.

first a very authentic, warm-herbaceous lavender. After 20 minutes mainly sweetened patchouli. Lavender could be much nicer!

Starts fresh and herbal with a hint of absinthe. Later, more of a warm, slightly musty lavender powder. Quite old-fashioned in feel...

On the damp tree stump, my leather jacket underneath, I sit in the herb garden next to the rosemary and chew on cloves. It's something. :)

Noble and delicate, reminiscent of Jersey, but softer, more neutral. Wearable and classically modern. A women's fragrance for lavender lovers.
