Licking at the Dumbbell!
Yes, I go to the gym. I have been to quite a few of them over the years, and I think I know about some of the smells you can find there.

Champion Energy reminds me of a certain somewhat special place in my home town. Insiders might recognize it: no Pilates, no jogging, no girlish gymnastics – only heavy iron, old and rugged but payed-off!

Not all of the boys there were particularly bright. If you were looking for it, they would confirm all of your prejudices and clichées. Many of them took whatever remedies they could get their hands on. There once must have been a box in a corner where you could serve yourself, and only after the tragic death of one of the members was it removed. Among the people there was a physician, and often the boys would approach him with a question. At one occasion, he was asked about the meaning of the package insert: “Stop the medication 4 weeks before slaughtering”!

It is the mustiness of the changing rooms, the fumes of the Adidas bags and sneakers that you might recognise in both of Davidoff's Champion variants. And it is combined with the smell of cheap deos. Who does this appeal to? Does Davidoff play with the male customers' latent homosexuality? Is it the ladies who buy this stuff for their lovers? Or is it just the nearness to the scents of cheap deos that the target audience is used to and therefore appreciates?

The core of Champion Energy is the same tart synthetic note that can be found in the original. We should not really take any cedar or oakmoss we read about in the pyramid too literally. The whole thing is sexy at first glance, and only after some time Champion Energy gets boring.

The gym manager maintained order and cleanliness – also this can be found in Champion Energy. There is a decent citric head note, and it is synthetic enough to evolve impressions of cleaning agents. The old dumbbells were made of real iron – none of that shiny and odorless steel. You can find a little bit of iron scent in Chjampion Energy as well, in its spicy heart notes. As a matter of fact, there must be spicy accord available – something in between cinnamon and maybe coriander – that provides a metal illusion. If you want to experience it more distinctly, try Bond No.9's Andy Warhol's Silver Factory.

Champion Energy, however, does not match the price level of the Bonds. After workout, the boys would sit at the bar and have their protein shakes. Very openly, the different characters of the local judges were discussed. Not too bad for me since at that time, I planned to establish myself as an attorney, and I was looking for clients.

I remember exactly the situation of signing the membership contract. The ink of my signature hadn't yet dried when the phone rang. The manager picked up the receiver, and shouted through the whole place: “Hey, Jupp, come over here, there's the criminal police in the line, and they have questions for you!”

The weakest fragrance imo!
I gladly just finished my 50ml flanker and could not wait it to finish, why!?I do consider this fragrance as one of the weakest and most synthetic fragrances I have ever had. To me it only lasted roughly 45 mins, both on skin and clothes, after this time I could not smell it anymore not even by chasing it.At the same time, it smelled quite similar to Ferrari Scuderia Red, I felt I was a mosquito's repellent after wearing it being the synthetic component of citronellol so prominent.
All in all I would definitely not recommend: good thing is that apparently it seems to be discontinued....and it totally makes sense.

Weak start, then a strong decline
Actually, I should have properly started with Davidoff Champion, and only then with its offshoot "Energy." However, since I was handed a sample of the latter during my last visit to the perfume store (and not of the former so far), I’ll bypass the unofficial protocol.

And since Saturday is also my gym day (along with other variables during the week), and I have nothing else planned for this evening, this scent seemed like a fitting olfactory soundtrack for testing.

So I sprayed it on, sniffed it, and immediately found it to be cheap and clumsy. The artificial citrus aroma reminds me of "Lacoste Challenge." Everything else also strikes me as extremely synthetic. I might as well dip my hands in dish soap...

With a somewhat uncomfortable feeling, I made my way to the gym, which, however, is not necessarily a classic muscle factory with the clichéd meatheads pumping iron by the ton. Of course, you can lift weights of all sizes there, but what I appreciate about the gym is the almost familial atmosphere, where you might run into your neighbors or acquaintances. All the more unpleasant it was for me to smell like this concocted stuff today. Especially since I heard that two members in the gym were exuding a much more pleasant sillage than I was - which is quite unacceptable!

So I quickly trained, then jumped in the shower, went to the sauna, and showered again to get that stuff off my skin as quickly as possible. It’s not a big deal, as the strength and longevity of Davidoff Champion Energy is anything but masterful or energetic. That I didn’t feel any stronger, uplifted, or more motivated during my workout doesn’t even need to be mentioned here.

All in all, the disappointment is significant, as I didn’t find the original Davidoff Champion to be that bad at all. I’m probably more disappointed with what has become of this brand, which had a rather innovative and successful start back then.
When they launched the flanker "Energy," they probably wanted to quickly have a say in the sports fragrance market. I fear they may have overreached a bit.

Maybe for after sports....
A typical scent for the gym bag after training. Extremely invigorating, aquatic-citrusy, with subtle moss providing enough herbal counterbalance to be masculine. This is how I envision a sport fragrance.

Admittedly: Relatively boring for everyday life in its one-dimensionality of pure freshness.

At first invigorating, relatively smooth grapefruit refreshes all around. The scent feels almost a bit misty on the skin, with subtle fresh-green nuances added by galbanum.

However, the evolution itself leaves much to be desired, "complex" is different. After about 15 minutes, the scent lingers in a minimally woody, at best fresh-mossy area.

A solid choice for the gym bag, otherwise quite boring.

Grapefruit shoots over the target - but beats the original
After the original Davidoff Champion stood out due to advertising and a great bottle (imo), it failed on all other levels, especially the scent. Davidoff quickly released this updated version, and I was curious if it would do better... yes, indeed, it is clearly better than the lifeless-boring original. Much more pronounced, memorable, special, stylish, sporty, better smelling

The bottle is even a bit more stylish, but the sillage and longevity are at a similar cheap level and not worthy of a brand scent. Especially a longevity of under 4 hours is annoying, sporty scent or not!

I really like the blend of grapefruit and spices and other masculine components; it feels very refreshing and invigorating and sporty, exactly what one expects. The grapefruit is extremely dominant, and especially in the beginning, it smells like a grapefruit-citrus cocktail, which fits with a lot of imagination into a gym, but perhaps is more suited for beach sports like beach volleyball or even football.

An improvement, but still far from a revelation or higher class. Neither the original nor this one will make it into the collection, despite the outstanding, innovative - cheeky - flashy bottle! Unfortunately...

Fresh citrusy, lots of bergamot with grapefruit + spices. Like lens cleaning wipes, just with grapefruit. Not bad, but not good either.

I don't think it's that bad at all. Very sporty, fresh, and invigorating. Lots of grapefruit, which is very refreshing. Plus, a nice bottle. It's got something.

Doesn't hurt and fades quickly; citrusy, spicy, very light wood, just a hint of oak moss.

The only thing that impresses me about this scent is the bottle - Davidoff, you can do better.

Generic freshness with a hint of wood that disappears faster than I can reapply. Scent is okay, but interchangeable.
