It should be called Benzoin
"Amber" by Demeter is only the second fragrance I've given a bad rating to on Parfumo. Not because the fragrance itself is bad, but because it is not what it claims to be. But in turn.
Ambergris, usually referred to by me with the English term as ambergris, is my favorite scent. Real ambergris exudes an incredible amount of warmth for me and gives me a feeling of security. So it was clear that I had to try Demeter's "Amber" at some point, especially since my first experience with the brand was very positive with "Ocean". A comment here, which rated the Ambergris in "Amber" as "quite well done", encouraged me. And for about over €10, you can't go far wrong. So it became a blind buy.
But unfortunately, my expectations have not been met. What came under my nose, was no ambergris. The fragrance has not even rudimentary animalic touches and also not the depth of Ambergris. The Ambergris very own smell of sea is completely missing.
What I smelled instead was a very sweet benzoin and a hint of vanilla, the kind that you pick up in benzoin every now and then. And this scent is really well done. If "Amber" was called "Benzoin", I would probably rate it very highly. The scent doesn't change much, but it's very authentic. But it's just not an amber fragrance. Not even close.
I'll wear it anyway, just as a well-made benzoin fragrance. Disappointed I am nevertheless.
