Life is good
Not too long ago I said to a friend that Dior has lost its mojo; its line-up is uninspiring and heavily overpriced. That was before I tried Gris Dior Eau de Parfum . The magnificent Gris convinced me to reconsider Dior, or at least to give the Collection Privée another try. So, next in line was Lucky and that turned out just as successful as Gris; easy-to-wear, highly refined and an absolute mood booster. It appears I was wrong about Dior after all.

Like Gris, Lucky excels in simplicity rather than artistic grandeur. While Gris is more of a composition (rose, patchouli, amber), Lucky could almost be called a single accord. A fresh floral accord resembling Lily-of-the-valley. Not necessarily the most natural feeling but who cares, we all know that there is no such thing as a natural Lily-of-the-valley extract. What matters is that Lucky gives off the most frivolous, carefree "life is good" vibes possible. Conventional, wearable perfumery at its best.

A lovely lily-of-the-valley perfume from François Demachy - well made but linear and simple
Dior Lucky eau de parfum is lovely white floral fragrance from the Dior La Collection Privée that bears all the signatures of its creator, Francois Demachy. Dior has started selling many of its La Collection Privée in 12.5 ml size, which is a good thing as the large bottles are excessive for those who have a sizeable collection. Lucky EDP was launched in 2017, and we now also have a flanker from Francis Kurkdjian which seem to embody a different vibe. This review is based on the 12.5 ml travel size bottle.

Lucky is a green floral according to Dior, with lily-of-the-valley as the major note. The green note is very minor, no more than the slight green accord you associate with white flowers like jasmine. Apart from lily of the valley, there are also nuances of other white florals, such as jasmine sambac, jasminium grandiflorum and tuberose. It is very simple and linear, but it is lovely. There is hardly any point in splitting Lucky into top, middle and bottom notes as there is no pronounced development. There are similarities with other floral fragrances from the Dior La Collection Privée such as Jasmin des Anges and Gris Dior, also created by Demachy. But it is mostly in the ethereal quality than in the specific notes.

Lucky shows good performance on my skin with longevity exceeding 6-8 hours. The sillage is good for the first hours. You can wear at work if you spray it a few hours earlier, and in moderation.

I recommend Lucky if you are looking for a good lily-of-the-valley fragrance. If you have other white florals in your collection, you should worry about redundancy. But the inexpensive 12.5 ml vials are a good solution. I am not sure if I will ever finish the travel size Lucky, because I prefer the more nuanced Jasmin des Anges over this one for regular use. Some of the notable florals with fig-leaf such as Givenchy Trouble Fete (jasmine) and Dior Dioriviera (rose) are worthy competitors to Lucky.

Floral Aquatic
I’m surprised no one has mentioned it yet, this is L’eau D’Issey! Of course a more bougie and green version, but an extremely similar juice.

I find this more feminine leaning, although others seem to find it more masculine. Its mineral and metallic notes hit you right away. Dry down is floral, you definitely get the lily of the valley, but I pick up additional floral notes, smells like rose or jasmine as well.

Nice aquatic floral fragrance, in my opinion not original as this is just another L’eau D’Issey DNA. Gorgeous but not worth the price when the former is a 5th of the price.

Lucky Lily - the talisman scent
Once again, I tried to bring order to the collection of samples or think about a system that would help me actually find what I’m looking for.
So I dig through what I have and come across one of those little droplets with a sediment of fragrance: What have I found here?
I realize that it is “Lucky,” the so-called talisman scent by François Demachy from “La Collection Privée Christian Dior.”
This little thing must have been hiding from me, because even in my various folders, I can't find “Lucky”; I haven't recorded this sample yet!
And I had previously overlooked perhaps the most personal scent of Christian Dior, which, out of superstition, had a lily of the valley sewn into the hem of every dress of his models and wore a small bouquet of these white bells in the buttonhole of his always dove-gray suit at each of his fashion shows.
Or did this droplet intentionally hide to avoid getting lost among the multitude of other Dior fragrance samples?
One could believe it: After all, lily of the valley are cheeky little “stinkers,” as they are often referred to here.

I also have a special relationship with these little flowers. Every spring, I cut a few stems, which I place in a special vase.
Whether “Maiglöckchen,” “Muguet,” or “Lily of the Valley”: Every year on May 1st, I celebrate “Maiglöckchen Day,” which is now also spreading from France to us.
Even beforehand, I think about which fragrance I will wear this year - or maybe even two?
Whether light-floral from the garden of Yves Rocher or spicy-fresh from Provence, noble and rich from one of the impressive annual bottles by Guerlain (I particularly like the one for 2022) or the already slightly decayed “Le Muguet” by Annick Goutal:
I find it hard to choose!
But for “Maiglöckchen Day,” I am prepared and enjoy what accompanies me.

And now “Lucky”!
François Demachy plays here with the most diverse nuances of lily of the valley that can be discovered throughout the fragrance's development, and surely there are one or two other white flowers hidden in the second row.
But above all, the little spike flower with its white bells, which grow from a nest of green leaves, takes center stage: White purity and damp green!
Innocent, almost transparent, and at the same time elegantly feminine.

So I have been wearing the just-discovered “Lucky” for several hours today, even though today is not “Maiglöckchen Day.”
Am I happy?
I don’t know; but I feel good; enveloped by this cool floral freshness, I sit in the cool shadow of the fragrance and enjoy spring.
Is it already over?
It doesn't matter!
For this way, I experience the cheerful beauty of lily of the valley across seasons.

So I dab a little more of this “luck” on my skin!
Let’s just see what else develops.

Unisex (more masculine), lily of the valley and herbaceous tea. Not sweet, nor fresh, full white floral. Again sophisticated and peaceful!

White floral heavy fragrance. Not much staying power, nor that much sillage. Pleasant scent, but not much else.

Dior's favorite flower, trying to make Diorissimo more modern. Very pretty and pleasing, but why buy this instead of D-mo for €200??

Once upon a time, there was a lily of the valley named Lucky. It smelled slightly sweet, fresh, clean + like lily of the valley. It smelled like that until it faded away.
