The last nail in the FM coffin.
I will start by saying that I am one of the few who loves the strenght of Promise and the mix of green apple with cypriol just work for me.

The fact that Estee Lauder decides to raise the prices every week, it´s also one thing which does not make me so interested in paying any € to them any longer.

Argument number 3: Frederic Malle, the founder of the house with the same name is OUT, from the summer of 2024 is out and its last creation was ACNE with Suzy Le Helley.

Now, to this scent:
- I got the sample from Spray Parfums with an order and I was happy as a child, unexpected but so nice from them.
- I sprayed on the wrists in the morning, full of "hope" to explore the new scent which costs over 500€ for 50ml (crazy!!) and the first impact was Leather Oud from DIOR with hints of Promise.

After around 2 hours it gets very shy and close to the skin, far away from the strenght of Promise or Oud Aquilaria .. okey then, such a beast "Hope" is not. THen in the dry down it becomes a screachy scent, similar with a 48h later Promise on clothes .. and almost unpleasant for my nose.

To be clear again, this is a scent which costs over 700€ in EU for the 100ml and I do not smell same levels of oud (like im Ombre Nomade or Onyx), sandalwood or rose into the composition (to justify the price somehow).

Conclusion:
From here onwards the Editions de Parfum can only go downwards, into the greedy path with unspectacular scents priced in a drinking binge .. nowhere in this world, a scent smelling like this can cost more than 200€ UVP.

who likes PROMISE will love Hope

This is simply a refinement of the already existing Promise, same DNA but with better ingredients and a base with more Oud and smoke. As if it were a “night/dawn” combo softened in the PROMISE DNA base, I personally love the sublime dry down of this perfume.

Thoughts
Just disregard the review from 'Razvanyke', the guy has no idea what he is talking about, this is a proper FM creation, curated under Malle's artistic direction, It's no secret that Malle used to work on several scents in parallel. Hence, it is more than likely that the scent profile of this was fully done when Malle left, there might be some marketing touches that were finalized later, but it is very amateur to think that perfumes like this from start to finish launch in 5 months (time from Malle's departure to launch of this perfume).

Also, are we still discussing the Desert Gem line with a price-to-value ratio in mind? This is a very specific perfume, if you want the best price to value go buy Lataffa you can't beat that, this is for connoisseurs who enjoy the quality of the blend and the story behind it. Also what year is that? I don't enjoy paying EUR 500 for 50 ml, but literally every single newcomer brand cost like that, doesn't this have right to be more expensive than Mindgames?

Also notion that this is a cash grab is just wrong, this is a niche within a niche, salty oud, vetiver perfume, which is opposite of whats currently trending and overall very small part of overall oriental or Arabian smells, how on earth this can be called cash grab.

The HOPE: Top Release from Frederic Malle I Brief Comparison to Other Desert Gems
I finally received my sample of Hope yesterday and I must say, it's a very solid release; the Desert Gem community can definitely be pleased! Now, the question of all questions: How is the scent and is it worth its rather hefty price (between The Moon and "The Night | Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle")?

Well, let's first take a look at the scent:

- The scent initially starts with a good dose of pepper and spice, which simultaneously smells fresh and woody. It has an oriental and unique aroma; inexperienced noses will have great challenges here, but somehow I like the opening; it's special and highly concentrated.

- As it develops, the scent becomes more and more beautiful. After this initial blast, a pleasant, non-animalic oud joins in, which blends with a green vetiver note and harmonizes extremely well. The initial spiciness, woodiness, and pepperiness gradually recede, creating a wonderful base in the heart note.

- Then, in the drydown, a slightly leathery note is added, which is absolutely not "funky," but is very smoothly integrated. The amber envelops the drydown and has been subtly crafted; not too resinous, not too sweet, but simply brilliantly embedded.

- The longevity is very good, definitely in the upper quarter; the scent survived over 24 hours on the strip and I could still perceive it on my skin the next day. The projection is initially really very good, then slightly diminishes, but it is definitely not a skin scent; it projects quite well.

Now, to the most exciting question: Can the scent be compared to the other fragrances from the Desert Gems collection? My knowledge is based on "Promise (Parfum) | Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle," "The Moon | Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle," and "The Night | Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle," as I do not own or have not smelled "Dawn | Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle":

- The most prominent comparison currently seems to be with "Promise (Parfum) | Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle." I must honestly say that I only partially understand the comparison or the reference. Yes, there is a phase between the heart note and base where the scents somehow approach or smell similar, but the opening is completely different and so is the drydown. What do I mean by that? Promise Parfum is much zestier due to the green apple and far less spicy than Hope. In the drydown, Promise Parfum is much earthier, more pronounced, and more unique due to the cypriol and patchouli. Hope is much more harmoniously balanced. To be honest, I like both. For a "layman," they might smell somewhat similar in the air even in the drydown, but as a fragrance enthusiast, you can really pick out the differences well.

- The comparison to The Moon seems far-fetched to me; it is much zestier in the opening and that fruitiness in The Moon is irreplaceably brilliant! In the base, if God wills, one could say there are similarities, but the overall composition in conjunction with the other notes is simply different!

- You can't even compare the scent to "The Night | Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle." Period. This one is much more animalic and completely different in concept.

Therefore; yes, the scent is a standalone release, which may share a small phase of similarities with "Promise (Parfum) | Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle," but otherwise stands solidly as a standalone.

I (HOPE) this is gonna be good...
And I was not disappointed.

The latest Desert gem from Frederic Malle, but does it live up to its name?
I must honestly admit that I can't relate to "The Night | Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle." While I do like Oud, I don't appreciate it in the ''barn'' way.

Oud and leather are also listed here, which initially made me fear it would be another publicly unbearable Desert gem, but the Oud in this one is rather tame and blends into the overall fragrance composition. The Oud gives the scent a strong smoky character and then becomes slightly creamy in the drydown. Sure, there is a very subtle animalic note, but you really have to sniff closely to notice it, almost convincing yourself of its presence. The Oud in The Moon is more animalic.

But now for a more detailed description of the scent:
Right upon spraying, a strong pepper note combined with a very harsh smokiness hits you. These two notes are the main players for the first 30 minutes and they won't be easily overshadowed. The pepper is by no means sharp in the nose, so no worries there. It provides an authentic ''dark'' spiciness and is perfectly rounded off by the juniper. The Oud contributes to the incredible masculine smokiness, especially present in the opening, and along with the leather, it brings a very subtle animalic touch to the fragrance. You might think of it as the "Promise (Parfum) | Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle," just much spicier and smokier and less fruity.

After 30-40 minutes, the fragrance then transforms. The smokiness gradually decreases, while the spiciness remains. It becomes softer in the base and also greener. The sweetness is now much more prominent. Both of these aspects are likely thanks to the juniper. From this point on, I believe the fragrance becomes somewhat more mass-appealing.

And here comes the first problem: mass appeal.
This is something all desert gems have in common. I really wouldn't know where and at what time one could wear such a fragrance...

At a party? - NOPE, I would rather reach for sweet scents that lift the mood.
In the office? - Hell no, my colleagues would complain because it's too strong.
Family gatherings? - I would prefer to go for everyday suitable, unobtrusive scents.
At the cinema? - You can imagine.
Dates? - This is NOT a date fragrance!
Vacation? - Maybe not in Italy, but definitely in Dubai!

Well, often one is not in Dubai or generally in the warm south, so I really can't think of where and when else one could wear this scent. Perhaps during a walk in the woods or a visit to the zoo, but that's about it.

Nevertheless, the fragrance is very well done, but is it worth its rather high price?
I don't think so.
It is indeed beautiful and something I haven't smelled before, but it is not 8.50€-11.40€/ml-beautiful.

I would rather buy 3 other niche fragrances with that.
Still, definitely test it and/or get a decant :)

Thank you for reading and have a nice day!

Another great addition to the Desert gems line. Is it as bold and bombastic as the other 4? No, but, it’s still wonderful.

Clearly a cousin of Promise, without apple & cypriol. Very wearable oud, smells natural, smoky and fruity. Never at this obscene price.

Very good release, touted as a fusion of The Moon and Promise. Pepper dominates in the first minutes, then delicate oud and leather…
