Neukölln 7: Cologne Grand Nix
If there was a man who didn't fall in love with Norah Jones while watching the movie "My Blueberry Nights", it was definitely not me
The jazz musician only gave us an appearance as an actress in this one film, road movie and taciturn romance, but it was electrifyingly beautiful, terrific - and a leading role right away. The female supporting roles are cast with Rachel Weisz and Natalie Portman. And rightly so. By the way, I also like the movie itself, even though the critics had to oil some things, but I like Wong Kar-Wai's works anyway: apart from this one especially "The Grandmaster" and "In the Mood for Love".

If you ask yourself now why I, although I am not such an enthusiastic and knowledgeable cineaste, write so much about cinema here, it is because then I don't have to write so much about this scent, which is not a pleasant task. Moreover, Cologne Grand Luxe contains a blueberry note, which is disturbingly synthetic. And even in a more natural version it wouldn't fit into the composition.

From the fragrance pyramid we have an almost ultra-classical Farina-Cologne in front of us, with the 100% complete range of bergamot, lemon, neroli, lavender and rosemary. So 4711, with tangerine and petitgrain, which would suggest a slight hint of orange and a tendency towards eau de Portugal. And a suspiciously eyed rose geranium together with a somewhat generic-sounding basic tang, which probably prolongs the shelf life and thus justifies the classification as "Eau de Toilette", and that at a fragrance at 36 Euro à 200 ml anyhow somewhat ridiculous "Grand Luxe" bubbles.

This - mediocre - expectation was again clearly undercut during testing. The scent shimmers strongly, not to say wavers indecisively around like a spinning top with disturbed fine motor skills. On the positive side it is to be noted that it now and then puts down quite nice lemony stretches and has a droll, gnarled juniper note in one place.

However, from the big line it can be described as a travesty of a beautiful classic colognes like "Echt Kölnisch Wasser" from 4711 or "Colonia Concentrada" by Alvarez Gomez. The basic idea breaks through again and again, but never really comes into its own, never really comes to rest and you never really get to see it. It is always tapered and cleared, dully vaporized and synthetically blown in.

In addition, there is a veritable cascade of strange, kaleidoscope-like foreign impressions that penetrate the helpless sniffers, of which I would like to mention only "ice cream candies", "very high-quality car scent tree", "brown-dirty peppermint", and the synth blueberry-like synths mentioned at the beginning.

All in all, even at 18 euros per 100 ml, this work of art has no reason to exist and therefore deserves to be thoroughly reformulated (and renamed) or even better adjusted as soon as possible. There you are much better off with the good old aunt from Cologne or one of the excellent Spanish four, six or eight hundred millilitre drugstore waters, or with the Czech Cologne Classique from Alpa for even less money.

And I have to watch My Blueberry Nights again.
