Perfect Linden

I find this to be the best Linden perfume I have come across. It really does capture the blossoms on sunny day, beautiful. I find there is warmth in this composition, sunny, sweet and nectar rich.

For what are "the linden trees" today? Exhaust-fume-laden air, vehicles bumper to bumper on both sides of the median strip that gives this passage its name, a few benches facing away from the road, construction sites ...
A bit of "shoving" really only happens during the "Festival of Lights," when the big light show attracts many amazed people.

The linden tree, this beautiful, patient street tree, is disappearing more and more from the cityscape: entire streets, mainly the old residential streets, are losing their early summer charm, their shady appeal.
The linden blossom is a nuisance: drivers parking in its shade and the city cleaning services complain about this beautiful green; year after year we read these complaints in the newspapers.

How this tree once shaped Berlin: Not only does the East-West tangent bear its name; so many beer gardens still call themselves "Zur Linde" today.
Where is the legendary "white with a shot" still enjoyed as much as "under the linden"?

This scent "N° 10 Linde Berlin Unter den Linden" is sold by Frau Tonis Parfum.
It was created by Harry Lehmann, now "Parfum Individual." The shop on Kantstraße in Charlottenburg is well-known not only to many Berliners but also to many perfume lovers.
However, this "linden" will not be able to delight us for much longer.
Due to the new EU regulation, it will also have to be taken off the market.
It is said, as I was recently informed in the shop, that nothing similar will follow.

So let’s cherish our treasure; it is worth it!
Here, the linden blossom is still authentic; it smells as intoxicating as it develops in the twilight.
These fragile feathery flowers generously release their extraordinary aroma into the thick, golden honey. A "linden blossom honey" in pure scent form.
This reminds me of enfleurage; only here honey is used as a scent carrier instead of fat.
Thus, this scent development is a truly sensual pleasure; the result approaches a fragrance high!
In the leaf green, the sunlight seems to play; it casts lively shadows, dancing on streets and squares.
The original Berlin summer comes from the flacon and delights at any time of the year.
And it is durable, this impression of a summer evening; perhaps due to its marriage with honey.
In any case, it accompanies me surprisingly long, remaining friendly and eventually bidding farewell quietly.
I will miss this "linden," which I have only just gotten to know in this form.

As consolation, I have a now well fifteen-year-old linden tree in the square in front of our house; the home of a sparrow colony that grows year by year.
It is also blooming now, completely, and makes us forget that we are in the middle of the city.
Frau Tonis' "N° 10 Linde Berlin Unter den Linden" has one thing over it: in the evening, it flirts with the large, rich elderflower blossoms and the white clusters/grapes of the two robinias, the so-called "false acacias" - this too was once an old Berlin street tree.
The scent concert that regularly arises here in the evenings is, however, so concentrated and intoxicating: it would probably burst any flacon!
It’s just a pity that my cricket got lost this winter. It lived in the large rosemary and accompanied many summer evenings with its chirping.

So let’s celebrate summer, nature, and of course Frau Tonis/Harry Lehmann's "linden"!

At the Well Before the Gate

If someone had predicted a few years ago that I could ever rave about a linden blossom perfume, they would have been met with the response: “I’m not sick!”
Well, then I was completely taken by surprise at Frau Tonis in Berlin. To top it off, my enthusiasm back in Switzerland is incredibly contagious. Luckily, I bought a 100ml bottle. The answer remains the same. “No,” my linden blossom-scented surroundings call out in unison, “we are anything but sick!” This is because this perfume absolutely does not evoke any associations with fever-reducing tea. Instead, it reminds me of an old folk song, and it goes like this:

“At the well before the gate, there stands a linden tree. I dreamed in its shade many sweet dreams. I carved into its bark many a loving word; it drew me always away in joy and sorrow.”

Ah, this scent truly makes me dream. I can easily forgive its somewhat borderline sweetness due to its down-to-earth freshness. I surrender to its aura and dream of one of those early summer days when nature reinvents itself with a cool breeze all around.

“I had to wander by today in the deep night, and I closed my eyes in the dark. And its branches rustled, as if they were calling to me: Come here to me, companion, here you will find your rest!”

Yes, here I find my rest. Which also means that this scent is not a provocateur and does not offer an exciting scent development. It smells of blooming linden, and that’s it. But it does so persistently. Recently, I had to travel for six days and sprayed my bedroom before leaving the apartment. When I returned home, a delightful linden blossom mist hung in the air, feeling like a hug.

“The cold winds blew right in my face; my hat flew off my head, I did not turn around. Now I am many hours away from that place, and I still hear it rustling: You would find peace there!”

Well, sometimes the headwind blows your hat off (since I like to ride my bike with a hat, I can sing a song about that too), but what can you do? Folks, (and by that, I also mean the companions) forget your fabric softener and instead perfume your bed linen with “Linde Berlin.” You will lose yourself at night in the comfort of a centuries-old tree. Or spray the scent on your skin during the day and feel neither softened nor soaped up, but rather reinvented by a gentle summer breeze all around.

Magnificent......back then!

To get straight to the point, I have never been to our capital and probably never will be. But I know films that show Berlin during the imperial era. That time when automobiles had not yet taken over the cityscape. That time when one could still stroll leisurely along Berlin's grand boulevard "Unter den Linden." Originally laid out as a riding path from the Prussian kings' city palace to the Tiergarten, this magnificent street leading to the Brandenburg Gate is lined with linden trees. Summer linden! They bloom in June. Back then, gentlemen wore tailcoats or suits and on their heads bowlers or top hats, while the ladies of high society were tightly laced into corsets, wearing beautiful long dresses adorned with Parisian lace. Dressed like this, they would stroll under the blooming linden trees at the beginning of summer on Sundays. The summer linden released the intoxicating scent of their blossoms, which smelled sweetly honeyed mixed with the aroma of the leaves, and the fragrance spread throughout the entire avenue.
This is exactly how "No. 10 Linde Berlin," Frau Tonis' perfume, smells. Delightfully authentic, as if one were standing under a blooming linden tree. The scent does not change and remains true to itself. It has a happiness factor for me and is simply enchanting in its simplicity and naturalness. I would like to thank the dear Addicta for allowing me to discover and fall in love with this wonderful fragrance. It is always worth a test if you like authentic scents.

Linden Blossoms...? on a Synthetic Soap Bed

A blind purchase (which I had actually forbidden myself), but after some praise online and the prospect of a bit of early summer feeling, I couldn't resist. I get linden blossoms here in this simply beautiful bottle and indeed delivered in the opening. However, the fragrance lacks that cozy and enchanting sweetness that real linden blossoms exude, which one "sniffs" while in the park or driving with the window open. Addictive, like lilac scent in spring. Here, something sharp is immediately present. No sooner has the nose identified the linden than it is overwhelmed by a synthetic green ivy soap, and I mourn that first, brief impression that almost - but only almost - came close to the linden blossom. I miss the warmth, a creamy base, and a comforting depth that would make you want to wear it on your skin. The scent is distant, crisp, metallic-clanging, and with a hint of vintage. A fragrance experience like in a lab, but for my taste, no sensual connection is created. I wouldn't want it on me. Strange. Perhaps more of a room fragrance...?

A few more notes on the fragrance manufactory and the package contents. Instead of samples, you can order scent cards (for a fee...!) to test other fragrances from the house. These come in small paper card holders and unfortunately already give off part of their potential to their surroundings during transport. And yes, they mix a bit with each other... In this respect, my impression here could certainly be distorted. I chose cards from No. 16 Jardin Vertical (here I mainly smell violets and unfortunately hardly any rice), No. 08 Été Éternel (phew, La Poeme resonance - too much), No. 17 Laundrette (uneven, piercing - but maybe it develops on the skin) and No. 68 New York (not for me, but maybe something for a man, although with a bit too much sharpness).

So that was my trip to Berlin, from which I return somewhat disillusioned to my favorite fragrances that seem to have more complexity. BUT: When we can travel again, I would like to give the manufactory on-site a proper chance. Maybe I can put together a nice, fitting fragrance from the building blocks. I think the concept is great in any case. And here, there just wasn't a hit.
