A Monster Fougere...
Nobile opens with an aromatic blend of bergamot citrus and lavender with a lime-like tarragon and rosemary herbal undertone. As Nobile enters the heart phase of its development, the early bergamot citrus recedes but the aromatic herb-laced lavender remains, coupling with a tremendous oakmoss note rising from the base joining balsam fir as co-stars with an additional rose and carnation floral supporting duo joining the lavender. In the late heart, the aromatic lavender slowly dissipates but the oakmoss and fir still remain through the dry-down now in support, as a relatively dry amber and non-smoky vetiver duo takes the fore to finish off the scent's development. Projection and longevity are both excellent, with the scent lasting 10-12 hours on skin.

Nobile is one of those rare aromatic fougere scents from the past that just can't be released today due to oakmoss restrictions. The very green herb-laced oakmoss and fir combo with floral support is absolutely captivating and dominates for most of Nobile's key development before turning to resinous amber late during the dry-down. The official note list is very long and quite frankly I am sure I missed a whole bunch of them, but Nobile just smells great, plain and simple. It unfortunately commands a price just as high as how good it smells nowadays due to its discontinuance long ago and the scarcity of remaining bottles on the after-market. That said, those looking for a reference aromatic fougere should look no further than this 4 to 4.5 star out of 5 classic by Gucci.

Gucci Nobile
If you are a fan of vintage Polo Green, you will really dig Nobile by Gucci. The dry mossy / patchouli accord is very smooth, masculine and mature. Overall, the scent is fairly "quiet" compared to other aromatic fougere's from the 80's as the blend is exceptional.

A 30ml bottle can be found for around $100-$150 and is entirely worth every penny for this vintage discontinued gem of a fragrance.

The essence of 1980’s mens colognes.
I remember the commercials when this came out. I liked the bottle so much when I saw it, I bought it without even testing it out. In a years time or so, it was gone and I forgot about it. Flash forward to 2001, I find a huge lot of Gucci Nobile products at an estate sale. I snatched it all up. Body wash and sprays, soap on a rope, deodorants, shaving cream and splash too. I absolutely adore this scent, it is the quintessential man’s cologne. A suddenly sharp but clean barbershop medicinal smell, it soon turns sweet and much gentler. Afterwards there’s this incredibly deep woods smell, sort of wet and smooth. There’s still nothing else quite like it. It’s amazing. 20+ years later and I have half of a 120ml bottle left and a 30ml bottle. If Gucci brought this back today, it’d probably sell very well. I just don’t think they’d get it quite right again.

Unforgettable scent
I haven’t have this one since the nineties, but I know I’d recognize it instantly if I’d be around someone wearing it. It’s just unforgettable. I even dare to think that this is the best juice I’ve ever had. One still can get it nowadays online supposedly from vintage collectors but at exorbitant prices.
If I were forced to throw away all my collection and be required to decide to keep one I’ll certainly struggle between Nobile and Chanel allure home sport eau extreme.

It should be called "F*%king Fantastic"!
Sometimes I find fougères nauseating, when the aldehyde component overpowers all else … But with Nobile, the fougère smell is toned down, smoother, and well-balanced. It’s complimentary to the spicy and sophisticated heart notes, giving them a clean pop without being overwhelming. Because at its heart, this is mostly a spicy and sophisticated green scent. Nothing smells quite like it. It's also a versatile scent - I can see it working in any season, day or night, even as a signature scent. Projection and longevity was moderate, about what you'd expect from an eau de toilette.

If you like fougéres, you'll probably love this. And if you hate fougéres, you might like this despite yourself. For comparison, my ratings of fougéres goes like this:

Gucci Nobile - 9.5
Drakkar Noir - 7.5
Azzaro pour homme - 5.5
Paco Rabanne pour homme - 4.0

It's a discontinued fragrance. And only place you can seem to find it now is eBay, where prices are expensive by any measure. Initially I thought I would just wear my sample until gone and then say goodbye, due to the cost. But it grew on me and grew on me - I’ved raised my ranking of it on here four times! Now I just love it and it’s my favorite overall fragrance. By the time I bought my full bottle, I didn’t mind paying at all.

It’s hard for me to be unbiased in rating this prized classic. Still, I think that Gucci Nobile is the aromatic fougère GOAT. 11 out of 10.

THE fougère. Green, herbaceous fresh - old-school yet somehow elegant and intriguing. Without sweetness and without synthetics.

Mini is no longer as finely scented due to age, but you can still sense its class. Delicately balanced spice with green-mossy elements.

A gentle moss of the softest, dark green shimmering kind, brightened by citrusy touches.
One of the best in its genre.
