Ambre Solaire
L'Oréal once used benzyl salicylate in its Ambre Solaire sunscreen products for its UV blocking properties. In the course of its product development, the company replaced it with more effective sun blocking materials. Funnily, this resulted in a drop in sales of their Ambre Solaire line, supposedly because it did not smell as good as the original. L'Oréal reworked their formula to bring back the benzyl salicylate component, simply for its olfactory effect. Et voilá, the solar accord was born.
Nowadays, the solar accord is used to dress up floral and ambery notes, in order to give that extra 'sunny' impression. In 1472, it almost seems like it is the other way around. The scent goes from a bright ylang to an incense-amber, where these two phases are connected by a rather non-distinct floral-amber-musk. Non-distinct as in hard to pinpoint its exact scent, but so dominant in the overall composition that the ylang and the incense-amber seem secondary. As a result, there is a 'sunny, lighthearted mood to it, which is an interesting twist on a note list suggesting a lot of ambers and no citrus. At the same time, the whole feels a little bland and the notes diffuse.
Bottom line, I find 1472 mildly successful as a summery amber scent. Having said that, I also think that it works better in a sunblock than in a perfume.
