A Complex Floral-Leather Quasi-Chypre
I recently discovered a cache of Humiecki & Graef samples which I had apparently set aside because I could not read what the labels said. (-; The samples were originally from Aus Liebe zum Duft, and I could not tell whether they were only partial samples to begin with or they were full but evaporated! I suspect the former. On reflection, I believe that these were sent to me by a fellow fragrance traveler in Switzerland--who has excellent taste!

CLEMENCY opens with a quasi-galbanum-esque quality beloved to chypre aficionados, and it mingles enticingly with leather. At first, I thought that this was going to be too rough and sharp, but within a couple of minutes it smoothed out to produce a seriously full-bottle-worthy perfume. The woods, the leather, and the light rose note make this a fine choice for gals or guys. To my nose this is closer to a floral-leather chypre than an oriental composition.

Not at all sweet, but with enough florality to balance the leather, CLEMENCY is a perfume which I can highly recommend for testing by people who like real perfume. (You know who you are...)

Nostalgia and brilliance
Humięcki&Graef fragrances continue to surprise me as I move the next one in my collection - Clemency. The bottle, as other in the line, is very elegant and simplistic. When I first read the description accompanying the perfume I wondered - How does one translate mother’s pride, such a complex and oddly specific feeling, into a fragrance? In the history of perfumery one style of fragrance has long been associated with femininity - and that’s chypre. Laudamiel simply took the chypre structure of a perfume and tweaked it a bit. The yellow flowers and green notes create a fresh experience - it’s like a walk through a spring garden - there is no sweetness, the sky is grey, the wind is blowing. The fragrance brings back memories in me of walking through a park as a child on a cold spring day, the trees have just woken up from the winter sleep and I’m watching the birds flying around. There is a sense of sadness and doubt in the fragrance. While it’s fresh, green and a bit rosy, it’s not an overtly happy scent. It’s solemn and retrospective. It’s about anticipation. Again, as in other fragrances from the brand there is a unique twist which sets the fragrance aside - here it’s the cold milky notes surrounding the honeyed flowers. Together with the leather accord it creates a slightly soapy-metallic experience - think of a buckle on a luxurious leather bag. Don’t be frightened - milk is not the leading note, it just irons the florals a bit making them less spiky. Although the fragrance tackles feminine emotions, the scent is unisex as it is not overly sweet and floral.
Has Laudamiel succeeded at the execution of the concept? Probably. Is it beautiful? Yes. Conceptual art seems always to exist within its idea therefore it is hard to judge as “mother’s pride” could mean anything. But the beauty of fragrances and art is that we can attach our experiences to it and make the story personal.

Sublimity
I admit - I am very aware of how bold I am to share my fragrance experience with Clemency after such excellent commentators. I dare to do it anyway.

I can understand Eternity's church well, but I enter with different expectations, namely not with the hope for love and security, but for tranquility, sublimity, meditation, and being moved. All of this is fulfilled by the scent.

The leather note prevents the linden blossom and the milk note from becoming too sticky-sweet. No, on the contrary, the two accords ensure that the leather does not come across as too harsh, but rather soft and caressing, protective and yet keeping everything around me at a distance.

Clemency evokes in me a feeling that I experience not only in cathedrals but also in castles or on mountains. A feeling of sublimity, here again I resonate with Louce's description, who speaks of a mission. The scent fits for me with the unfortunately far too rare moments when one feels completely at one with the universe. I don't want to sound overly dramatic, but Clemency is truly a sacred - but not pious fragrance for me.

Constrictions
Lou has described the scent so beautifully and portrayed the meaning behind it fantastically.
My vision of this fragrance, with the image of a loving mother in mind, was wonderful. I thought that if such a strong image resides within a scent, it must be incredibly beautiful.

But to be honest, this fragrance gives me quite severe constrictions. I feel like a person entering a church full of hope for love, only to feel coldness there. The clergy, the procedure, the atmosphere...everything is so far removed from human needs for belonging, protection, security, and love. I want to get out of this church as quickly as possible. I do not want to voluntarily expose myself to such constriction.
The only culprit for my feeling of constriction can be the leather. I smell it from the very beginning. It’s as if it wants to impose a severity on the cheerful and romantic notes like currant, rose, and linden blossom, a corset that holds everything together, a precaution to ensure that virtuous boundaries are not crossed, so as not to endanger the order.

I smell them, the cold statues. I smell the cold stone, the cold air. I feel trapped. I must not be as I want, or else I fear punishment.

I get a sense of what is meant by milk here. No, I do not want to suckle at that breast. I am afraid of this mother!

But the scent fits the image that Louce has drawn below. It does not smell like a mother giving birth to a child and showering it with love, but rather like a mother fulfilling a mission with the birth.

Without the leather, it might be a very likable fragrance, but as it is, it is far too strict and cold for me. It simply does not smell inviting, but rather distancing.

Unfortunately, I have to rate it poorly, as it addresses my feelings quite negatively, even though the scent is really well made. In any case, it was an interesting experience. I would be too curious to know who would enjoy wearing such a fragrance.
In any case, there is a very sacred moment in this scent.

Little Turn-On
First of all: The pyramid is accurate. Everything is there, and all at once.
And it is exactly this fact that makes the scent so complex;
I had to learn clemency. Luckily, the sample is big enough to open that leather-bound book every now and then.
On each page, neatly dried linden flower stems are glued in at the bottom edge, by the embellishments. The flowers shine softly and silky because they were previously, rightly so, preserved all around with Schwarzkopf Taft Ultra hairspray, strength 5.
This hairspray note almost meant 'death by white musk', but the subscription, thank God, had not yet expired. Because in the penultimate chapter, the moral of the story reveals itself to me:
Milk and linden do not clash.

Beautiful flowers,
and... I also have rose.
The sandalwood was misjudged.
It smells fig-like.
Not very leathery.

Very soft and creamy and quite unusual.
However, after a nice start, it becomes very rosy.
What a pity, it started off well.

The scent is distinctly sweet due to linden blossom and acacia, but it gains edgy notes from leather and wood: finely balanced.

Minty-cool rose dew on herbal, sweet leather smoke. Creamy-sweaty anise, bright pepper spice, and balsamic woods.

It overwhelmed me on the first test. Great combo of lime, a hint of leather, and milky sweetness. Overall, a bit too sweet for me.

O clemens, o pia, o sweet virgin Mary! Exceptional scent of cold ozone, rose, linden, milk, and leather. Truly great art, but hardly wearable.

Milky-green linden blossoms. Velvety like shampoo, gentle like body milk. Rose water, soft leather, a drop of acacia honey, sandalwood. Amazing!
