Stay On These Roads
Quite manly but mild, Classic is one of those perfumes that sets a trap for you and deceives you. Yes, because its blue colour makes you imagine a fresh, aquatic fragrance, perhaps with ozonic and marine nuances. But no. It's not another fresh or blue cologne, but something spicier, herbaceous, rich in foliage and aromatic hints, which Jaguar classifies as aromatic-fougère. This is the original, then roughly the other seven flankers were released, up to the recent Classic Electric Sky.
Classic unfurls with a citrus and aromatic blast. The first thing you notice when you smell it is the delightful mix of mandarin, bergamot, and orange. The melange of the citrus fruit soon blends with aromatic and green nuances of herbal lavender and basil leaves. But the opening does not mean all those actors play the game, and an almost spiced star anise takes the stage. It is powerful; it is overwhelming; it is the king. At this precise moment, I recall another precious little jewel with a similar blue glass, born ten years earlier and named Nightflight Eau de Toilette. I can't help but match the two. Perhaps the anisic edge makes me think of it, despite Nightflight having no star anise in its roaster. Of course, they share many notes, which might bring such an accord. And Classic seems less aggressive than Nightflight.
This perfume opens with hints of green and citrus notes yet remains light. A fine heart note combines the spiciness of ginger with the delicate notes of orange blossom and lotus flowers. The floral facet sometimes has a tinge of metallic while the anisic shadow lingers in the air.
The subtle woody and balsamic notes, accompanied by luxurious sandalwood, sumptuous benzoin, and white musk, are responsible for this fragrance's lasting sensuality. The more the fragrance approaches the dry-down, the more the musk becomes noticeable to stay until the end. It does not change a lot during its evolution but remains fresh and aromatic.
Its fresh, airy, and clean feel is what I need on a spring morning, fresh out of the shower, skin still damp, before pulling on a t-shirt and sweatpants. Those lazy mornings when you don't work, it's cool and sunny outside, and you can take your time, take a long walk in the grass, read a book, or listen to your favorite music. Great as a sporty, for the gym, or whatever sports. As for performance, it is a moderate scent. You might have to reapply one more time during the day, but it is not overpowering, so adding an extra spray is good.
I'm basing my review on a bottle I've owned since August 2016.
