Perfect for Ghost and Goblins
Vanilla & Anise starts off with a strong anise/fennel note which is delicious! Sweetened slightly by the dry vanilla bourbon and a dash of Tonka in the middle...it is mesmerizing. This is definitely a gourmand scent for lovers of licorice, though not overly sweet, IMO. About 15 minutes in, I detect a "rootbeer/sasparilla" accord, which is akin to a creamy wintergreen+vanilla+nutmeg for those who don't have Rootbeer available. This seems to wear better on a Fall evening, as it blends with the surrounding smells of burnt maple leaves and crackling fire places. I initially tried it in the Spring and gagged- due to a hot cloying synthetic orchid note that stepped right out of Britany Spear's Fantasy (a.k.a., my personal fragrance nightmare...), but now on a cool overcast Fall day...I do not detect that at all, there is a touch of orchid but it is well behaved, adding just a little sensuous abundance and "eye of newt" to the cauldron. Vanilla & Anise seems softly alluring, reminding me of the excitement and thrill of dressing up in our coolest costumes of ghosts, warlocks and goblins and collecting free candy on Halloween.
After about an hour this dries down into a lighter, watery version of something in the Hypnotic Poison/ Acqua Di Parma Mandorlo family, but with a double shot of Iso-E on the bottom. Though the sillage is about 3-6 inches (7.6-15.2 cm) radius- off of my skin maximum- this is typical of the Jo Malone Line, so if you've tried some from the line, you already know that they are fairly sheer.
I think this is a mysterious, lovely vanilla and licorice scent, with a slightly haunting vibe to it that might layer nicely with JM's Nutmeg & Ginger Intense, Vetyver, French Lime Blossom-for the added freshness of a daytime scent or even Nectarine and Honey Blossom- if you have a real sweet tooth. Either way, you will have to invite this creature of the night across your threshold, it is not the sort of sillage monster that will lunge upon you, teeth-bared and ready to attack anyone in sight. It's a little sexy black cat familiar scampering across your path under the harvest moon.
