Grenats Keiko Mecheri 2000

During my Jasmine sniff-fest as a new perfumista, I found Keiko Mecheri's Jasmine, renamed Clair-Obscur) so repugnant, I gave my FB away and was reluctant to try anything else from this house. Luckily I eventually did and was entranced by Grenats (also Bois de Santal and Mogador). The notes here are deceptively simple. After an initial blast of citrus, strongly punctuated by pomegranate, the rose enters on a very effective base of angelica and musk. Some genius nose figured out that angelica's green and musty sharpness is just the thing to enhance the freshness of pomegranate. Add musk and rose and this mimics more compex scents in loveliness. Both the pomegranate and the angelica grow in the dry down. The combo may sound strange, but it isn't. With rose and musk, it becomes distinctive--a way to smell great while standing out from the rest. Sillage is strong as is longevity.

In Grenats, everything revolves around the pomegranate, a delicious fruit with high symbolic value. The apple is mistakenly referred to as the fruit of temptation in Bible translations. But in reality, it was a pomegranate that Eve used to entice Adam. This fruit, bursting with juiciness, has an intensely ruby-red color, and its hundreds of small seeds also represent a symbol of fertility in some cultures, has a deliciously tart-fruity aroma. I was practically born with pomegranates due to my family's ethnic background, and I have certainly consumed quite a few fruits in my life. I also know pomegranate syrup, not grenadine!, which is used to enrich dishes, for example, in combination with grated walnuts.
Now, although I should be a pomegranate expert, to be honest, I have never particularly noticed the scent of pomegranates in my life.

Grenats by keiko Mecheri does not smell bad, but I am quite disappointed because the combination with rose is a successful makeshift attempt to make the pomegranate feminine and attractive, but for me, there is still a dullness in the scent that I do not like. Here, citrus components would have been desirable to contrast the dullness/stickiness with freshness. Thus, the scent remains simply too boring and inconspicuous for me.

However: There are certainly many women who greatly appreciate skin-close, inconspicuous fragrances and who desire a hint of floral warmth on their skin. A slight touch of an Asian vibe is also present in the scent. Many Asian fruits do not have a strong fragrance, but they do have a strong and delicious taste.

My 60% is, for once, based solely on my fragrance taste and not on the quality of the scent or thematic realization.

With the name "Grenats," I actually expected a fruit explosion triggered by a hefty portion of pomegranates. What I received from my sample, however, is a soft cloud of musk with a few fruity-citrusy sprinkles. I miss the promised pomegranate.

Instead, the fruity-fresh nuances come across as somewhat sour, but for me, the creamy musk and a subtle, unobtrusive rose note definitely prevail. Overall, "Grenats" is rather airy and discreet with a relaxed character.

The EdP behaves linearly, meaning it doesn't develop further, and one might wait in vain for the pomegranate, as I can gather from some statements. Those who eagerly latch onto the name "Grenats," expecting a scent with exactly this focus, should probably avoid a blind purchase. This is not to say that we are dealing with a less demanding or inferior fragrance - it is just very musk-dominant, too shy, lacking overwhelming perfume artistry, and missing the mark.

Fruity, unsweet, clean, close to the skin, fits.
Pomegranate or not, Keiko has certainly performed a nuclear split here.
Citrusy musk minimalism without! Roses, as Mr. Lutens has already incorporated in L'Eau; because that’s where it develops after a secondary sillage incubation period. Grenats is sterile, doesn’t spin at 1600 RPM, but is no less intense during the drying process.

A very fine, white unisex; Adam and Eve could easily cut themselves a slice of this.
