What Happens When You Mix Coniferous Cypress With Deep Incense?...
Eau des Baux goes on with a spicy pink pepper and cardamom tandem before slowly transitioning to its early heart. After the spicy open the spice recedes but remains now in support, ceding ground to a somewhat woody coniferous cypress with hints of smooth incense peeping through. As the fragrance progresses in the heart the incense deepens and intensifies to take the fore, moderately sweetened by tonka bean from the base which gives the overall accord a relatively sweet pipe tobacco like vibe with the cypress and cardamom dirtying the overall accord somewhat. During the late dry-down the initial spice all but completely dissipates, leaving the tonka bean, incense and remaining supporting cypress to give a relatively sweet sendoff. Projection is good to very good and longevity is average at about 8 hours on skin.

Eau des Baux was quite a surprise when I finally got around to trying it. Tobacco is not listed in the notes and indeed it most likely contains none but it does have a very deep pipe tobacco vibe that permeates the heart of the fragrance and it smells incredible. The cypress utilized throughout the composition is key to making everything work, as it adds a woody slightly coniferous underlying facet that counters the sweetness of the tonka bean laden incense to balance the composition. Eau des Baux is frequently compared to Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford and I can definitely see why folks may make the comparison, but Eau des Baux is the more complete and interesting composition of the two that sells for a heck of a lot less money at its $52 a 100 ml bottle price tag. The bottom line is after sampling this one at my local mall, I left L'Occitane, got to my car and then turned around and bought a bottle as it completely impressed me (relatively low cost aside). Values like this 4 star out of 5 "excellent" rated fragrance are relatively scarce, so I recommend seeking Eau des Baux out for trial and possible purchase.

A smoky chapel on a sunny day
Contrary to what I expected after my first experience, this has really grown on me. I never was a big fan of vanilla, but this is a very nice take on that theme.

The opening is very 'in your face', especially when sprayed on the neck or somewhere close to the nose. But it soon turns into a warm and smooth scent. The cypress becomes very apparent and the incense gives it a full bodied smokiness without becoming too overpowering. Most incense perfumes give me the image of a dark and smoky church, but this one makes me feel as if I'm in a small chapel somewhere in the Provence, where the hot sun warms the stone of the church and the wind blows in the air over the cypresstrees. Very beautiful! And to think I wasn't sure about this one at first.

It also layers well with Encre Noire, creates an interesting scent. Especially when it's fully dried down, you get a very warm and almost creamy like vanilla, very full bodied. But I prefer Eau des Baux without the dark and dirty vetiver of Encre Noire.

Real Quality...
I am so pleasantly surprised by this one. Eau des Baux strikes me as a fragrance which is worth a lot more than it's price tag. Extremely well made, to a level beyond what is expected from a house such as L'Occitane. It is a sweet, herbal woody scent which is reminiscent of other woody orientals (notably Tobacco Vanille). There is little not to like here, as it is warm, soft and never too loud. I find it strikes just the right balance of each note and works beautifully throughout the day.

I get the cypress, a wonderfully green and also dry herbal note, mixed with tonka bean and incense. The dryness comes from the woods, incense and cypress, with a hint of herbal background, and the sweetness, which is almost honey-like, comes from the vanilla and tonka bean.

I really think that, as a masculine fragrance, you cannot go wrong. It could even work on a daring lady. Eau des Baux really is phenomenal when you consider the price it costs. I think that people who like the honey, tobacco like fragrances, or woody orientals in general, will like this. Otherwise I would recommend trying this first. Another aspect which I like about L'Occitance is that they offer matching products to this, and I tried out the shower gel before trying this, which in itself has a fantastic aroma and feel. Overall, I cannot recommend this highly enough, for lovers of dry, herbal, woody orientals etc. Really nice. Lovely!

Great value fragrance
Please see my video review for one of my favourite vanilla, incense based fragrances. I cannot think of another fragrance in my collection where you get the same quality, dollar per millilitre.

Autumnal Warmth
Scentrack
Incognito - Autumn Song

A beautiful and inexpensive offering from L'Occitane. Gorgeous mix of cypress, incense, tobacco, sweet tonka and vanilla. This vanilla is one of the best I have ever tried. It really reminds me of old book smell in the library. Not similar to Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille, but share the similar vibe. It has some ancient, natural smell. Perfect for autumn chilling with your favorite book.
One can say it's niche. Great fragrance for a great price. A true gem.

Very warm and still gorgeous in warmer weather, which is what I associate it with. I apply maximum 1 spray and it lasts 12 hours STRONG.
