Be Prepared

I welcome this loud powerhouse as it marks its territory. It jolts you into awareness with definitive presence. The Patchouli goes on strong but tame. Fresh earth and authentic wood tickle my cilia as I struggle to wait for the drydown.

My senses are heightened as this breath of clean, dirty air takes me back to a walk through the arboretum where I deeply inhaled the earthy smell of compost, soil, and mulch.

Imagine being at the summit of a roller coaster and swooping down into the serenity of safety. This is what you will experience when you cross paths with Patchouli Antique.

Although this fragrance is not complex, it stands out because it is aggressive and docile simultaneously. Patchouli Antique is a warm, feminine, beautiful representation of what fragrance lovers seek when they want the real deal. If you have the courage, take the plunge, just Be Prepared for a wild ride.

Unpretentious hippiness

Simple, austere, honest: in one word, good. Patchouli Antique is a totally good and respectable patchouli scent containing basically nothing more and nothing less than what a patchouli fan would want, with all its nuances: from earthy-rooty to balsamic, from stale-moldy to its dusty heart of cocoa-beans like notes. Pretty much nothing else except for a pleasant feel of warm, slightly sweet amber, mixed to a subtle and dusty musky note. Not too sweet, not too raw, just nice and cozy. Nothing really “antique” though, so don’t get fooled by the name: nothing decadent or nostalgic like in LM Parfums’ Patchouli Bohème or Parfumerie Générale’s Intrigant Patchouli. Still a totally good perfume, simple, rich, solid, probably not groundbreaking but an unpretentious, everyday gem for all patchouli lovers. It costs pennies, so grab one if you like this note. The longevity is a bit weak, though, but for the price and the concentration it’s fine.

Dusty....

....seems this scent and so does justice to its name. For lovers of heavy patchouli scents well suited. For all the others: enjoy with caution. This scent stays and does really smell like dusty wood (a little anyway!!).

Might sound plain, but very comforting

Vanilla and musk tell you exactly the tone Patchouli Antique means to strike. In its favor, it's lovely and smooth, emphasizing the rich, powdery-dusty side of patchouli. The downside for us perfume thrill-seekers is that from the first sniff I felt that I knew exactly where PA was headed. And I was right. Still, if you just want to relax into your patch, PA does the trick.

Dusty cedar patch

Despite buying one of the pre-reform bottles from an eBay seller in Italy (back in 2014 when everyone was buying their Les Néréides bottles from the same source), I never quite understood the rapturous praise for this one. It smells, well, like patchouli, with only that incredibly dusty cedar note to distinguish it from the rest of the pack. The much advertized vanilla and benzoin finish is disappointingly wan even in the vintage version (their Opoponax, on the other hand, delivers the goods), so if you are feeling saudade for a version that has now melted into the ether of time, don’t worry – you’re not missing much.
