A grand start with Petitgrain.
The theft of roses.
Captivity in a resinous seraglio.
You may indulge in almonds.

I can't judge whether this 2016 version of the fragrance comes close to the original from 1921.
It definitely lacks the animalic notes and woods that the original was said to have.
And you can really smell that.
Because the only counterpart to the floral notes are the resins and a bit of bitter patchouli.
But in the middle of the development, I get a whiff of bitter almond that pairs wonderfully with the opoponax. This duo makes the scent creamier; the body lotion isn't far off.
But let's take it step by step.
A glorious start with strong petitgrain, and the other hesperidic notes complement it. Very unusual for a women's fragrance.
I'm totally thrilled here.
But then vanilla and almondy opoponax take over, which smooths out the flowers.
So, it becomes more oriental.
If it were just a bit less overpowering at this point, the fragrance would be phenomenal.
As it is, it's quite well done, but it knows it has stronger competitors.
