The Black Rose...

I always love trying creations from Miller Harris. I feel that Lyn Harris is a master perfumer who has a talent for making beautifully crafted and exceptionally natural smelling perfumes.

Rose en Noir is a deep, dark spicy rose perfume which reminds me of other creations such as Rose 31 by Le Labo. I also feel that this is one best suited for night and formal wear. The combination and blend of strong, prominent rose with aromatic dry tobacco is really unique, which is combined with the spicy cumin, black pepper and coriander, dark patchouli (always a common combination with rose) and crisp violet leaf.

This is like a rose in darkness, shrouded in night and dark shadow. A very dusky rose perfume which is sultry and different. I recommend this one and actually find it very unisex (with just the right amount of spices). Nothing is cloying or overwhelming or out of place. It shows once again that Lyn Harris is a master perfumer and at the top of her game. Great stuff and worth trying out.

This rose is a quick-change artist

"Rose en Noir" - what a magnificent and atypical example of Miller Harris. Not a bit green in the process, maybe just the first few seconds. A spicy, spicy rose is in the leading role; at first it looks a little old-fashioned and ladylike, then it becomes more and more spicy and turns into a kind of fragrance twin of "Arabie" (by Serge Lutens)-I don't know how this is possible, but the resemblance to "Arabie" in the middle phase of the fragrance is simply amazing. Clearly the rose is only half to a third as loud as "Arabie". And then, in the base, a spicy rose becomes a clear, sweet-fruity lipstick rose (the raspberries, patchouli and ambrette seeds probably pass through there), until it dissolves into a powdery scent.
This rose is a quick-change artist.
(The scent lasts about 6-7 hours on the skin and the sillage is short to medium at the beginning and very close at the end.)
A great fragrance full of surprises!

She dances to her own tune. ...

Every stage of this beauty is heavenly to me. I wear it any time of year but particularly love it in very cold, damp weather (which we get plenty of here in the UK), it brings out the natural, moist character of the rose.
The rose is the star here and is evident throughout the life of the perfume. I just love the luscious, juicy open heart of a rose at the start with a little lift from the violet leaf and I usually overspray to get a load of that. But hey, that's ok, because it's an amazing composition and has no harsh or painful edges whatsoever.
Pepper, coriander and a perfectly soft, high quality, rounded dark tobacco note join with the rose so beautifully, seamlessly luring her into more daring, darker, denser aspects of her character. (I love tobacco and this is one of the best I have smelled).
The patchouli is a very mellow dark green dry earth, subtle, a supporting role. I also detect a black assam tea note. The cumin I don't really smell, but I think it helps everything to merge with our lovely, natural human skin smells. And the ambrette musk is the soft peach skin bed it all rests on.
The base of this perfume is really very good, traces left on skin, clothes and hair make me want to burrow my nose deep into the smell. There is a richness to this and a sumptuous creaminess beneath the later stages which I adore, where does that come from? I don't know but this stuff just loves my skin chemistry and I love it back.
Rose en noir - she's a strong character who dances to her own tune, for sure, it took me a while to become accustomed to her, but now I know her, she is also warm, intimate and thoroughly engaging.
Sillage very good for a couple of hours then gets closer.
Longevity is awesome on my skin and my clothes.

Smoke a ciggy with this.

Deep and sultry red rose in a darkened room with leather sofas in the background. Neither too rosy nor carnal. This is clean, crisp and smart. There is no concession to any fluffy floral here. This is a rose for serious rose lovers. It is like a savoury rose. It has an old fashioned slant to it like old fashioned pot pourri with a dark rustiness of a slightly sharp nature but natural sharp as opposed to a jagged one. There is one note at the base that I cannot place almost like carrot seed, so I had to look it up. It is ambrette seed. I was just feeling like this is missing something to really tie this down and a person lit up a cigarette next door. That was exactly what this needed. Smoke. It is dark, brooding, floral and just far too polite.

A rose-tobacco combination, not quite successful

This fragrance does not belong to the darkest of rose scents, but it is medium dark. During the first 2½ hours it is an original combination of fresh rose and tobacco, at equal intensity. The pepper is soft, it only makes the rose a bit 'prickly'. After the first hour I detect a bit muskiness, it might be the ambrette.

From the 3rd to the 5th hour on my skin, it has turned into a disappointing rosy brown (tobacco like) smell, getting weaker until it disappears. Not a favourite of mine.
