From two to one
The top note of Original Oud briefly reminded me of Karak tea, a traditional Arabic beverage. This is tea with cardamom and saffron. Fortunately, you can hardly notice the rose geranium.
A little later, a very nice dose of gurjun balsam comes through, exuding that brittle, rough scent that I really like. Here, I see clear parallels to Oud Velvet Mood by Kurkdjian or the sibling Pure Oud by Kilian. In those, it is copaiba balsam, very similar and hardly distinguishable.
Then the Laotian oud awakens, not fruity and floral as the main actor, but embedded in saffron, it gives volume. Although saffron is not so indicated in the pyramid, I still claim this because my nose perceives it that way. It could of course be that the woods have a similar effect. Here, I see a very clear similarity to Oud by Kurkdjian. This impression slowly dissipates into a beautiful woody drydown.
Alberto Morillas and Francis Kurkdjian could be brothers; they both have the same signature.
Original Oud bridges the gap between MFK Oud and MFK Oud Velvet Mood, or rather unites the beautiful components of these two fragrances into one. I find it extremely well done.
