80's revival masterpiece
Francis Kurkdjian has done some amazing fragrances, specially for other brands. And this first masculine from Narciso Rodriguez is a great example of it. A musk based scent with a lots of patchouli and violet leafs.

This composition is kinda simple yet still unique and interesting. It utilises violet leafs in the opening, which mixed with patchouli gives this famous "wet concrete" accord. Very dry, gothic and a bit austere in the opening. Totally a throwback feel, with a modern twist. A powerhouse type of smell with animalic nuances but more focused on the "wet concrete" vibe.

As it dries down, the earthiness of the patchouli mellows a bit, becoming more rounded and sweeter. I personally enjoy it more as it dries down, when the amber and the musk became more present, giving a mellow and sweet comforting smell.

The fragrance has a very melancholic feel and everyone that like old style fragrances would probably like this one, since the patchouli-musk is the main theme here. The amber helps it being more rounded and appealing to newer noses. The longevity is decent (8h easily) and the projection is very good for the first 2h.

The only problem is that this one was discontinued and they only sell the Bleu Noir line nowadays. But you can still find deals on this fragrance online and i totally recommend you to buy it because it's unique, interesting and great overall.

I love this one since the first time i tried it long ago. It became one of my favorites and every time i wear it i understand why i love it. I wear it manly during spring rainy days but even in fall, when you have cooler cloudy days, this one fits perfectly.

My favorite from the brand and one of my favorite Kurkdjian creations of all time. It pairs very well with the women's counterpart that he and Christine Nagel had created years before. Although the musk is more pronouced in the female version, you can still smell it here mixed with a beautiful patchouli and a ambery base. Brilliant.

Spring rain...
A beautiful strange fragrance and even though very typical of aromatic-fougere type.
Eager to try when I received it, I sprayed 3 shots and was hit instantly by a dark cloud of grey amber, violet leaf, patchouli & musk that almost choked my senses. It's like a dirty oily concrete perimeter that surrounds a violet & patchouli garden under a spring rain and I just love it !.
The spray mechanism is very effective so I would say a max. 3-4 sprays in a normal day to get the whole feeling experience. Ambery, fougere, wet, musky, aromatic, dark, long-lasting...it has them all !. My personal rank 8.5/10. Recommended. Nice job Mr. Francis Kurkdjian !

Big City Streets Smell On A Gloomy Day
The way the master perfumer treated musk here undeniably brings your mind to a moist, clean and soggy accord. I do not base the damp asphalt accord that everyone describes on the smell of the individual notes, but strictly on how Narciso Rodriguez for Him, in its entirety, creates and revives it as a unique scented experience, genuinely like no other. I have never found another colony comparable to this one. The fragrance is reminiscent of new grass, damp moss, and wet bark, but it is so much more! Imagine walking along the sidewalk of a big city shortly after a short but intense spring or autumn downpour. Smell the wet concrete sidewalks, cobbled streets, ancient buildings, and structures around you that converge with clean sweetness and natural, clear, rain-soaked air. This scent stimulates introspection, like walking down that same busy street, alone with yourself. The composition also evokes the structure reserved for truly successful creations, certainly niche quality and character.

The fragrance is, in fact, as many say, a masterpiece. And so do I. It is a musky and earthy floral scent. I can make out a powerful punch of violet, then the musk, and finally the patchouli in it. Without compromise, it is a sweet, clean, and almost green opening with some floral shadows underneath. This accord makes a good impression from the start, at least to me: the violet leaf is refreshing and smells like young grass. The ozone opening is almost unparalleled. Not the kind of ozone smell you get when the first raindrops touch the burning summer asphalt, rather like the air you breathe when the silver raindrops start watering a wooded area, the undergrowth. Imagine that the rain has just stopped and the sky is still dark; there is a field of violets peeking out from a carpet of moss with raindrops sprinkled on them. The perfume for me is as if I had taken a violet leaf and crushed it between my fingers, bringing out a bittersweet aroma. The violet leaf isn't breaking out here, but the way they mixed it is. If that note releases an oil-like chord when mixed with leather, as in Fahrenheit Eau de Toilette, it reproduces the damp concrete-like chord when combined with musk.

The scent is relatively linear and moves quickly from this outrageous, almost dramatic act of opening to something infinitely more wearable and understated. The combination of musk, amber, and patchouli takes center stage, never really removing the violet leaf from the background. If the powdery and moist note hits immediately, the base comes with more manly notes of musk and patchouli. Thick amber, but not sweet or cloying, and super masculine musk give a soft, soapy accord. Very classic, but there is something extravagant hidden between the lines. As already mentioned for the opening notes, amber, musk, and patchouli are well blended, clear, and soft on the finish. The first two create some buttery heat in this one, making sure it doesn't get so bland that it feels more like a smelly chemical. At this point, the ideal mix of white musk, which smells of clean, and dirty patchouli, which smells of earth, gives the best of itself to this fragrance—the right balance between clean and unclean, savory not too animalistic.

There are few examples left in circulation as they have been discontinued for some time, and it is a real shame. The most recent For Him Bleu Noir Eau de Toilette has nothing to do with it. Kurkdjian has created a unique and challenging to interpret fragrance with only a few ingredients that leave a strange moist, earthy, mineral, ozone, and slightly sweet feeling. More suitable for the cooler months, day and night fit great, although it shines best during rainy days, such as gloomy spring and autumn days. Performance is outstanding, sillage is decent, and longevity is substantial. Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to call it an evocative masterpiece. It is simply absurdly sophisticated and unique.

I base the review on a decant I have owned since February 2021.

Suburban freak
Narciso Rodriguez for Him is a mainstream gem, and an unnecessary evidence of how Francis Kurkdjian works so better on commission (who’s the least fan of his own “cheap-luxury” brand? Me). Anyway: the opening is fantastic and unmistakable, a leafy, dark, astringent “greenish wet concrete” which smells of pungent humid darkness – a moldy, harsh, filthy kind of urban darkness, with a genius hint of dry lipstick. Despite it is a designer scent aimed (one may guess) at a broad audience, it delivers an incredibly gloomy and funereal mood, really fascinating and terribly well executed: a gothic, crunchy, really bitter violet leaves note on dark, dry patchouli and an aloof, musky “grey concrete” note. Pure poison for a quite simple composition which however is iconic and really unique, smelling like lipstick, dead leaves, vitriol, wet streets. A “post-modern” world which makes you think of those alienating metropolitan areas just at the very borders of the suburbs, where abandoned warehouses meet abandoned woods – you’re not yet into “pure nature”, but out of civilization already. Narciso smells of all of that. Which makes it surprisingly “niche” (I said that in a positive meaning for once), far more than all the dozens of depressing, uninspired overpriced bullshit which make their way to niche price tags. Not a crowpleaser for sure, but safe enough somehow; it is dark but terribly refined and sophisticated. It makes a “statement” so it’s definitely one to try before buying; but I wouldn’t really consider this daring or weird. It’s perfectly compelling, just a bit dark with a sprinkle of freakness. The only flaw I would mention would be maybe its objective quality, meaning that in my opinion the materials here aren’t exactly top notch – especially on the drydown, which is quite linear, a bit cheap, and maybe boring after some hours. But who cares for once – this is evocative, even its “cheapness” may have a creative role here, as in fact we’re talking about concrete and dead leaves – nothing fancy and nothing luxurious. A real gem, if it was discontinued it would be praised like a holy grail.

Dreamy stuff...
This is such a dark, complex smell yet so pleasing! There's something about it which is quite intriguing on an olfactory level. I like it a lot!

Narciso Rodriguez for Him is a primarily a violet leaf and musk fragrance. It's not an unusual combination, and the aim of this fragrance was to pay truibute to the fougère masculine fragrances of the 1980's (for me this one reminds me of Dior Fahrenheit, especially the use of violet leaf).

However, this is not one that smells old or "dated" in any way, it smells very modern, and almost contemplative and serious. You can tell that this is a fragrance for a "serious" person, maybe even a "thinking", quietly reflective or confidant person. It has that impression for me.

Imagine the smell of cold rain near the forest... there is damp patchouli representing the undergrowth, wet violet (also little sweet from the amber), and clean, cold air from the white musk. It's also totally wearable, I think I would describe this most as a "contemplative" fragrance. A "thinking" one. But again it's still totally wearable. One to try for sure...

Simply put, odd. Violets, green notes, musks (plural). The result is a trully original, uncomparable, modern blend.
