My first unusual fragrance
When I was 18 years old, a small perfume store opened around the corner from us.
I went there with my brother and we were able to get hold of some designer fragrances, which were offered to us at a better price.
At the checkout, the owner told us that he would add the Nikos for €10, the 100ml version.
Not tested, as he didn't have any open, but we didn't want to say 'no' for the tenner.
When we got home, we unpacked the fragrances and I really wanted to try the Nikos, as I'd never heard of it before.
"It's probably a cheap fragrance that doesn't last long and smells awful if he wants to sell it to us for €10," I said
Sprayed it on my arm, smelled it - and WHOAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
My sense of smell exploded, because everything I had known up to that point had been ordinary, light designer fragrances.
I had to DJ that evening and sprayed myself with the stuff. I smelled it all evening, until the end of work. I still had it on my clothes the following days.
I urgently wanted a replacement bottle, preferably 30 of them for €10 - but they were nowhere to be found. Neither anywhere in the store, nor at the retailer where I got it. Bitter. Very bitter.
I still don't understand why this wonderful, distinctive fragrance was discontinued. Surely it can't be that so few people just liked it?
After I had finished this 100ml bottle and my heart was breaking, I found 30ml versions on online platforms for exorbitant prices. At first I didn't see the point in paying a lot of money for it, but it was MY fragrance. Nobody knew it, nobody had ever seen it, I had discovered it.
So I decided to spend over €130 on it.
It sat in my cupboard for years, the packaging never opened. It was going to be a special moment when I wanted to use it again. And it became my engagement party.
