Like Christmas in a bottle
One of the loveliest Christmas-type scents I’ve smelled. I’ve used this sample several times and each time I can’t stop smelling my wrist. The dried fruits and citrus peels are prominent for me, followed by incense-like spices and some vanilla. It’s lovely and evocative, with a strong feel of midnight mass; it has such a connotation of winter holidays that I don’t know if I could wear it at another time of year. I do really like it, though, and could see myself getting a full bottle once my sample ran out—if only it weren’t so expensive!

A Sophisticated and Unconventional Take on Vanilla
Vanilla Shot has all kinds of contrasts and balance. There is an initial freshness and spice, then a warm, resinous heart, and finally, a sophisticated, multifaceted vanilla base. It is a scent that does not linger but rather evolves on the skin over time, revealing layers in its character. It could be defined as a "grown-up" vanilla because of its linear and sweet appearance in mainstream vanilla. Vanilla Shot is a creative, intellectual exploration of vanilla itself. It does everything that vanilla does not. It plays with expectations and gives a sophisticated, memorable, and satisfying scent experience to the wearer. This fragrance is essential for the perfume enthusiast wanting to explore a vanilla that has depth and character, and even a few surprises.

Sparkling dried fruit dunked in bath of golden, resinous vanilla
Vanilla Shot smells like the color gold to me, opening as it does with an overdose of saffron, its iodine-like sting aerated by a shot of champagne aldehydes. Slightly sour and tangy and fizzy, it then becomes suffused with the scent of a freshly peeled blood orange, the bitterness of the pith mixing nicely with something grainy and resinous. It takes me a while to understand that the thing powering this effect is, in fact, a huge oppoponax (sweet myrrh) note that always smells to me like an astringent men's aftershave mingling with burnt toffee. The vanilla is barely there, not a major player, but adds an accent like cream soda that softens the raspy bark of the resin. It feels lightly spiced, too, with pepper and cinnamon bark, though this may be an illusion prompted by that Duchaufour-ian flourish of dried fruit. In the end, this is a sparkling gingery-incense-amber-dried-fruit kind of thing that I really like but also feel I have smelled many times before - the biggest similarities I spot being with Nishane Ani and, oddly, the far drydown of Lush Lord of Misrule. In other words, nice, but not really doing anything too original.

the quiet vanilla
I must admit, Vanilla Shot did not disappoint me; on the contrary.
I am pleasantly surprised by the fact that the vanilla here is not as overpowering as I have experienced with fragrances that have "vanilla" in the name. The title Vanilla Shot screams gourmand, a linear delicious vanilla scent that I would have been very enthusiastic about a few years ago. However, I now have certain expectations when it comes to a perfume.

Therefore, I was even more euphoric when I treated myself to my first Vanilla Shot in the evening.
A generous portion of unsweetened saffron mixed with coriander and the remaining spice aromas found in the spice collection wafted towards me. The synthetic aspect of the fragrance is something you have to like, as it doesn't hold back here. However, it doesn't bother me at all, as it harmonizes excellently with the spices and the dried fruits.
At first, Vanilla Shot has a bit of a sharp edge, as the synthetic components need a moment to settle. But that passes relatively quickly, leaving behind an extremely spicy, aromatic, and wearable synthetic scent.
I would almost go so far as to say that the name of the fragrance is misleading.
Because contrary to what one might expect, you do not experience a shot of vanilla liqueur here. Instead, you feel transported to a moment when you rummage through your large tea collection made up of various spice and fruit teas in search of your favorite. It's as if you were entering a delicatessen, following the scent that your nose picks up until you ultimately land in the tea and spice section.
I can't quite say whether I would describe the scent as warm or cold; for me, it actually lies in the middle, which is why I can imagine wearing it in the summer as well.

The vanilla is indeed present, but it does not take center stage. However, it adorns the entire fragrance journey with authentic sweetness alongside the caramel.
The scent profile thus appeals to fragrance enthusiasts who are not into the overly sweet vanilla gourmands.
In the end, I am very glad to have tested it. Whether it is a candidate for purchase, I do not yet know. The performance is quite good, but I am still unsure if I would reach for it often enough to justify a purchase... what can I say... the same dilemma every time ;-)

Yet a few words of appreciation
I have already written a short statement about this fragrance, as there
wasn't much more to say. And fundamentally, that hasn't changed.
However, I now find the scent so wonderful that I can't help
but dedicate a few warm words to it.

So I would like to announce the following:

Vanilla Shot, you are so hot! (That’s really terrible, sorry!)

Only after the umpteenth sniff did you reveal your true face to me,
I cannot resist you.
You are cozy, spicy, warm, I succumb to your charm.
Every time anew, while I already look forward to the next time
I get to experience you.
You definitely possess projection and sillage,
are dry-fruity, slightly vanillic, spicy and warm,
there's no question about that.
You stay by my side all day long,
you certainly come with a high price.
Let’s see if my words entice people to buy...

To put it plainly:
We have here a fragrance from Olfactive Studio from the Sepia collection.
The bottles of this series are a real eye-catcher. The price is indeed very high! But you do get a lot for it. On the skin, the longevity easily exceeds 10 hours. On my scarf, the scent lasted several days.
Thus, it is a very wonderful, long-lasting fragrance,
that smells delightfully sweet of dried fruit and vanilla. Although the vanilla plays more of a supporting role. The scent is slightly spicy, yet not intrusive.
Projection and sillage are indeed remarkable.

Think gourmand mixed with resins. This is a unique & delicious offering that present a candy like, bubblegum accord in the dry down. Yummy!

A slightly different vanilla that comes off soapy and spicy, almost boozy in a way. Great that it's something different, but just okay.

Cinnamon gum between dried fruit. Too sweet, sticky, synthetic at first. The base is more forgiving, cozy spice. Vanilla is hardly present.

Will I get a chance to speak again today?
asks the shy vanilla
NO, grumble
saffron, opoponax, and caramel.
The rose is sulking too.

The namesake vanilla plays a supporting role here. Coriander, rose, and plenty of opoponax and benzoin take center stage. Subtly sweet and nice.

Wrong name: it's called Spice Shot
I like it but you expect vanilla
it comes
but only much later and the spices remain dominant

A diffuse spice mix with a lot of coriander
I don't perceive any fruits on me
It's more pleasant due to opoponax and benzoin,
still too spicy though

Saffron, slightly soapy aldehydes & lovely rose combine with resinous-spicy vanilla (or opoponax?) to create a balsamic whole.
