Just Okay?
I definitely get a straight strawberry vibe from Black XS like everyone says, a fresh citrusy and slightly sweet strawberry scent. But it's not overly punch-you-in-the-face sweet if that makes sense? As in I would say the newer Pure XS is sweeter. But to follow down that line of discussion, I do think Pure XS is a better fragrance. I just think Black XS is quite ho-hum in comparison.
Pure XS is like a sugary sweet cocktail with a touch of spiciness from the ginger. At the same time, the citrusy nature of Pure XS gives it sparkly finish. It's a bit sweet, a bit fresh and tiny bit herbal without leaning too much into any direction.
Black XS is comparison is a little herbal, a little fruity and a tad bit citrussy, but it sits very flat on my skin. Meaning there's no effervescence or 'pop', which is what I typically look for in men’s fragrance. It just smells 'pleasant' for lack of a better word. It's very different from other Paco Rabanne releases, which are typically loud, sweet, and synthetic. This one stays on the skin for a little while, but again, very quiet and a bit soft in terms of projection.
That being said, I'm not sure if this is just a weak batch (code 30421, 2011 approx) because I've heard legends about this cologne and I'm afraid to say I don't really understand the praise. It's simplistic to my nose, almost to a fault really.
But if you've never tried BXS before, don't let my review deter you. Overall, this is a simple and inoffensive scent, so you might enjoy it way more than I did.
Final verdict: 6/10.
