Lily of The Valley Archetype
It's interesting how some fragrances sometimes raise me some questions deeper than the fragrance aroma itself. This almost unkown Parfums de Nicolai creation (apparently from 2008, maybe still yet in production, tough i couldn't find much information) made me reflect about the different archetypes we can found inside the white flowers genre. Maybe jasmine can be the flower we could use as a kind of base archetype, a white flower model that we can use since many of its aromachemical molecules can be found in other white flowers. Lilly, Gardenia and Narciso are just a few examples of flowers we can achieve based on jasmine, tweaking it by combinations and proportions to achieve their smell. Those white flowers can have different personalities, being carnal, angelical, Flores brancas podem ser carnais, angelicais, joyful, sober; apparently is this olfactive 'personality' profile of the different white flowers that we end relating to each one. Yet, inside of the white flower genre you can still find some that make bridges in aromatic profiles with flowers like rose or geranium due, again, to similar molecules. Why do i begin my review talking about it? Because Eau de Lude, inspired by the Loire Castle in the Valley of same name, seems to summarize in a beautiful and harminous way one of those archetypes, the aspect virginal, maternal and pure qualities that the lily of the valley seems to represent, making me think of those different images that usually white flowers produce and the typical aromatic profiles associated to them. This is one of the archetypes of white flowers that is widely appreciated since ancient times and that on my researches i discovere it was at first associated with the masculine public instead of the feminine one (i suspect that a cultural shift happen with time, since today this and other flowers are seem generally as feminine). Altough the few notes i found listed jasmine and honeysuckle as the main notes, what shines here is an abstract watercole of citric, green, citric-green flora aormas, with just a pinch of galbanum. A symphony that seems to blow in a spring field, an aroma that remembers the embracing white side of jasmine, the green, silky and bitter nuances citric rose nuances, the earthy and green geranium with galbanum and a quite discreet peppery touch. The base here seems quite simple, a radiant and very longlasting aroma, a mixtyre os musks with woody traces that seems to wrap the lily of the valley accord to make it last, sustaining its beauty. Certainly it's a product of talented perfumer capable of manipulating the other flower nuances to achieve this image/profile in a perfect and harmonious way.
