Gourmands always spell out pink marshmallow, caramel goo, tutti fruity & company right?
Wrong.
Here is one for grown ups, with its austere packaging and serious, albeit exotic name.
Handy if you want to indulge in a guilty secret, as it camouflages its earthly delights to perfection.

So, how does it smell?
Well, could have fooled me that it was a spicy amber to start with.
Great, but not that unusual.
Pay attention and a rich and opulent date note soon emerges from the depth of an ancient terracotta pot.
Another one where less is more.
The accord is simply beautiful, moreish, and simply delectable.

This is the sticky date pudding of the fragrance world, kept in check from turning too sweet by a raw clay-like edge.
Soft, conforming, and classy.

The temptation of wine and dates

“She took down a round mat from the wall and spread it out on the floor. The first time I tried Dzhari I really was reminded of this passage. Kazantzakis not only describes all the elements found in Dzhari but I have the same visceral response to his words and the perfume. The Malaga wine accord is very tannic and the first spritz of Dzhari always has a slightly astringent, mouth puckering effect. The date accord has a deep, rich, molasses sweetness that balances and lifts the drier elements of the fragrance. The terracotta notes act in such a way that you smell the tactile and visual qualities of an unglazed clay pot; dusty, dry and earthy red. Finally, the smokiness of the fragrance brings all the elements together and you envision yourself in a little town somewhere on the eastern Mediterranean coast sitting fireside, warm and relaxed, sipping wine and eating dates.

Dzhari may be the most unusual gourmand fragrance I’ve come across. Admittedly, my description might make it difficult to imagine wearing this as perfume. Some might find it challenging. However, while the wearer might perceive all the individual elements of the fragrance, my sense is that others experience Dzhari as a deep, rich, earthy incense perfume rather than anything they would recognize as gourmand.

Dzhari is a unique fragrance that deserves to be on every perfumista's/perfumisto's bucket list. By the way, thanks to Dolby for writing such an excellent review (below). It enticed me to make Dzhari part of my wardrobe.

50-50 male-female in this fragrance? Interesting When I got the samples from the dear Christiane from Oldenburg, he was the first one I noticed. I just found him horny, but for me it was clearly a man's scent. He's schnappsy-liqueur, brings gourmand notes with him, but clearly screams "I'm a man" for me. So I gave the test to my better half, who also found him ingenious (and I first ;))

Then Dzhari was allowed to move in with us. I don't have this typical Christmas market association here. For me, Dzhari is no more and no less sweet than many other classic men's fragrances. The sweetness brings some pep, because the fragrance always remains alcoholic-sweet, a bit like Nasomatto's Absinthe, which I don't see at all on me (or any other woman). At Dzhari I like the cuddly base above all. Smells like snuggling up, enjoying, just delicious!

And he holds and holds and holds. 8 to 10 hours, easy! Sillage is present, but not on the nose. A clear nine for me.

Name Dzhari stands for the Libyan desert wind (please do notice the resemblance with Chergui, a Maroccan desert wind).

Opening of Dzhari is very interesting. Semi-gourmand sweet date notes, a plum compote with cinnamon vibe and characteristic Tonka bean are juxtaposed to dark, earthy and almost peaty accord. I really like the clash of notes which gives something daring to this fragrance. Unfortunately, this soil accord is short lived, and after 10-15 minutes on my skin is virtually gone. I was left only with one dimensional date/plum compote, accompanied by pale Tonka and some faint signs of cedar in the background. That’s it, just a shadowy sweet notes lingering. Nice idea, but needs more “muscles”.

Place 1 of 21 Phaedon fragrances from the hiking letter

Too little for a comment, too much for a statement... therefore here in fast forward:

Many thanks to Schahram for the opportunity to participate in the 21-part Phaedon hiking package. In general, Phaedon already offers a large spectrum, but there is not much overlap to my preferences. So for me three fragrances have relatively fast and clearly highlighted, which are worthwhile in my nose of a review.

These were:
1. "Dzhari"
2. "Lentisque" (see comment at appropriate place)
3. "Oliban" (see comment at appropriate place)

"Dzhari" is a very masculine, bitter scent. It is dry, earthy, slightly powdery and therefore not clear, but rather muted. He's not oriental. Sometimes I think I smell like peanuts, but in a very dark form. All in all very solid and for me almost the best of all. If, yes, if there were not an absolutely underground Sillage, which of course is not necessarily noticeable with a wandering sample set and the sample quantity restrained with it. At the souped up 5 ml sample, however, I experienced the disaster. This isn't any fun. Not even if 100 ml would cost 30 euros. Very, very sad!
