Mainstream
Uh, what an evil word am I using here for my headline? MAINSTREAM. A few days ago, I read the discussions in our forum about mainstream and niche, as well as the various positions and opinions on this topic. It made me realize once again how differently one can see, evaluate, and represent individual things in life (and should).
Mainstream. Who remembers? At the end of the last century / beginning of this century! When bands like Limp Bizkit and Korn accused bands like Creed or Bush of being mainstream. Yet they had become nothing else. Namely mainstream. What does mainstream actually mean? Main stream? Could it originate from electrical engineering?! Mainstream means, and I may quote:
“The taste of most people in a society.”
Look at that. Ergo, much of what is expensive is also mainstream. Or does anyone want to claim that “Aventus” is not mainstream? With the liter quantities that flow through the souk daily. It can't get more mainstream than that, can it?
What do we have here with Prada? Of course. Mainstream. A copy of Dior's “Sauvage.” Actually quite cheeky. But since copying and repeating is common in today's society, my criticism here is rather contemplative and tired-smiling. A modern scent in modern times. Overall, I actually like Carbon better, as it envelops me less in this Ambroxan bubble than “Sauvage.” The pepper is not quite as bombastic. It simply does not overwhelm me as much.
I find the longevity to be decent. And Carbon is also perceived through the sillage. And yes, the feedback is consistently positive. I like the bottle; I just find the sprayer a bit strange. No nicely wide-spread mist, but a short, crisp “Pffft.” Dosage is made difficult. The cause is probably the not entirely optimal position of the spray head.
Conclusion? Actually quite simple. If you like “Sauvage,” you will also like Carbon. No more and no less.
How many times have I actually used the word “mainstream”?

I think mainstream is viewed so critically because these days everyone wants to see themselves as something special. Following the taste of the majority is considered rather uncool.
