Brilliantly Composed Piercing Green Florals...
Eau de Metal opens with sharp nose tingling aldehydes, with a natural smelling hyacinth floral in initial support. As the composition moves to its early heart, the aldehydes take a back seat to the hyacinth that now shifts to the starring role, with yellow floral ylang-ylang and white floral lily-of-the-valley joining the aldehydes in support. Significant mossy green oakmoss emerges as co-star, adding a musky-woody undertone to the overall complex mix. During the late dry-down, the composition remains relatively linear, as the aldehydes vacate and the florals gradually recede, leaving remnants of the green-woody oakmoss to pair with relatively clean synthetic musk through the finish. Projection is excellent and longevity outstanding at over 20 hours on skin.

I must say that initially Eau de Metal took a bit of time to win me completely over. It was evident from the start that the composition was extremely well-crafted, but something about the piercing aldehydes, coupled with the hyacinth-driven florals just seemed like it might be a bit too much to comfortably wear for this writer. That said, I think the oakmoss that is quite prominent in the heart section, acts enough as a binder to bring the aldehydic florals down to earth to make the whole thing work. Once you wear Eau de Metal a couple times it is hard to dismiss the obvious skill that perfumer Robert Gonnon exhibits to combine all the ingredients into a slightly challenging, but completely successful concoction. The bottom line is the sadly discontinued $65 per 50ml bottle on the aftermarket 80's release Eau de Metal is just another fine example of the amazing perfume output of that great decade and an equally fine display of perfumer Gannon's skill, earning an "excellent" 4 stars out of 5 rating and a strong recommendation to all vintage perfume collectors.

cold clear future
It's quite a challenge to figure this one out. Rabanne had Metal, then Eau de Metal, and some say there's an Eau de Metale pour homme. My bottle looks not at all like the one shown here, but clearly says "eau de metal" (with appropriate diacritical marks I don't know how to make).

So, I'm mystified. But this lovely scent is clearly a close relative of Calandre, Rabanne's futuristic beauty of 1969. It's a very chic florist shop, cool and damp on a sunny day, where you can smell the tin buckets that hold the flowers. To me, hyacinth is most prominent.

I've looked for a note listing, and find a lot of confusion on the subject. The one that makes the most sense to me is one from a contributor on Basenotes: aldehydes, hyacinth, lily-of-the-valley, rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, and basil, with a base of oakmoss, vetiver, amber, and white musk. Because I associate it so strongly with Calandre, it makes me think of 1960s futurism - the original "Star Trek," "The Jetsons," and other shows that made clear to us that surely we'd be flying around with jetpacks or teleporting around the globe by the 2010s! It makes me want to buy a chrome and glass coffee table.

Steel-blue cool meets floral-green
A "double scent" that later merges into a unity.
Has anyone ever sucked on a stainless steel object? A piece of cutlery without food? Or on the barrel of a high-quality pen? Then you can imagine the first impression of the fragrance in the top note. Appropriately named "metallic-cool" and in blue as a color. It is likely due to the special aldehydes, along with the citrus fruits. Lime?! Grapefruit?!.... Who cares!
At first, it is quite distant and aloof.
However, this changes with the arrival of the flowers. First, probably lily of the valley. Still quite cool, but no longer "frosty." With rose and a bit of jasmine, more warmth comes into play. Mild, pleasant, slightly spicy due to clove.
Galbanum should not be missing either. It adds a whole lot of green. Soap-green, "FA-like," just a bit milder. Fresh and light-footed. For quite a while, these are the dominant aromas.
Until a mossy-woody "foundation" sets in, ensuring that the "metal" from the beginning of the fragrance firmly connects with the floral-galbanum heart, and the "chypre" truly comes to the fore. Finely bitter, delicately floral-spicy, mossy-woody, distance and closeness, all elements come together to form the ONE fragrance: Métál by Paco Rabanne.

Madame looks stern with iron-gray-green eyes. Only when you get close do you realize: Even she has flowery-soft feelings. Sometimes....

The start was cool, the heart interestingly warm. Very special scent, high recognizability. My sister's favorite as a teenager!

It was great back then, and it still is today. A strict chypre with a distinctly fine soapy tone and lots of moss in the base. Timeless!

Cool aldehydes combine with earthy moss to create an unconventional floral chypre that radiates class and elegance.

Chypre scent that I’m biased towards. My mother wore it in the 70s.

With Rabanne-Chypres, you catch Crös, a very clean stainless steel surface with a bouquet of lily of the valley on it. Thanks to the moss, there's a lot going on. GREAT!

Green, cool, lightly citrusy, powerful yet distant.

Besides Ivoire, Jicky, Cristalle, No. 5, Calandre, and Rive Gauche, one of the best! I love the metallic garage note above all!
