"Samba Pa Ti" - or: Oud for beginners
Oh no ... My colleague "Minigolf" has done something to me! As soon as I sprayed my freshly bought oud from Reminiscence for the first time, my head music player started to play. And what? Of course "Samba Pa Ti" ("Samba for you") from the album "Abraxas" (1970) by Carlos Santana! This is what colleague "Minigolf" associated with this scent. And that has obviously become a permanent feature of my life.

Not that I don't like Carlos Santana. I even attended one of his concerts. By choice. It was at the Wiener Stadthalle. Carlos came on stage, academically delayed. He was dressed in white, as usual at the time. Despite the already delayed start of his performance he breathed into the microphone - I still remember it today: "Give me one minute of meditation ..." He made it interesting. Stood still and meditated - whatever. It was the time when many people started to deal with Asian religions and esotericism. Carlos was a disciple of the Hindu guru Sri Chinmoy. But since in Austria such trends always seem to arrive a little late, if at all, the audience showed little understanding for Carlos' meditative desires. Whistles became loud. First sporadically, then more often. I was ashamed of my uncomprehending countrymen and thought: "Let Carlos meditate for a minute ..." But the audience remained merciless. Well, after all, they had all paid well and truly to hear "Black Magic Woman", "Maria, Mariaaah" and - of course - "Samba Pa Ti" - everything the mainstream just loves ...

And the charismatic Mexican guitarist did not disappoint his fans either. They got what they wanted. Would he dare to play some of his more sophisticated compositions like "Caravanserai" beyond "Oye Como Va"? I think he would. Because I don't have a bad memory of the concert
I wasn't very "mainstream" then and I'm not very "mainstream" now. And here we are again with Oud from Reminiscence. I bought it because the mostly positive comments convinced me and I love oud. I now have 4 ouds in my collection. From Reminiscence I also already own a fragrance, namely the graceful Patchouli N' Roses, which was also created by Fabrice Pellegrin.

Reminiscence delivers good, solid quality. There is nothing to be said for it. But the oud is, to put it bluntly, more "Samba Pa Ti" than "Caravanserai". In Vienna, "Samba Pa Ti" would be called a "tearjerker". I don't think it needs translating.

The oud of Reminiscence has similar qualities. I would describe it as an oud for beginners, who may have a little respect or even fear the trendy scent of the eaglewood tree, because they fear it could smell "like anything" - too animal, medical, fecal, musty, smoky ... What fans of niche scents may find interesting, newcomers to oud need not fear. This oud is so to speak soft-washed, soft to the touch, soft to foam, pleasing and charming. Why not? Oud does not always have to smell irritating. Does it?

Here, from the very beginning, you feel wrapped in a - I would say noble, woody sweetness, as if in a cocoon that surrounds you with a soft, gentle, dreamy, comforting aura - or rather tries to protect you from the harsh environment.

The fragrance has something pleasantly spicy, especially at the beginning, which is probably due to the cardamom and pink pepper. But soon saffron with its slightly bitter, warm-sweet aroma comes into play. And transports us to the Orient - initially with the floral accents of rose and jasmine. Soon also with balsamic creamy wood notes, to which a fine oud lends elegance and something luxurious. As ingratiating as "Samba Pa Ti".

The fragrance does not undergo a great transformation. It remains more or less as it is At most I feel a little bit of the bergamot at the very beginning. It never takes the leading role
Saffron always goes well with oud. Especially when it's so "tamed".

Only the wood nuances and the oud of the base note give the fragrance its actual theme - the oriental. But the Orient has a tourist-friendly character: ingratiating, silky, warm and soft. By the way, the base note is quickly reached and has come to stay. At least for a while. Yes, the durability is not bad. The sillage could be better. After three or four hours, the scent slowly fades, but is still very pleasant after a while. Like a delicate veil.

For me the fragrance radiates something like autumnal romanticism. Sometimes it reminds me of candied fruit. It's a pleasing bouquet that Master Fabrice Pellegrin has put together here, with soft wood notes, oriental, floral sweetness and dry oud. Almost too pleasing. Beginners will get the best impression of oud here. Because he shows himself very cuddly. Almost too cuddly for me. But that might be because I know other oud scents that are more interesting and exciting for me, because they show more depth and character. I think of my two ouds from Maison Francis Kurkdjian, for example, which simply "dare more".

The Oud by Reminiscence is very harmonious and light, discreet, pleasant. Melodic, I would almost say - like "Samba Pa Ti". So rather quiet, dreamy, pleasing. Or in other words: soft and unobtrusive. Well suited for autumn and winter. Especially autumn.
It is an aromatic, fine "feel-good" fragrance that soothes and invites you to dream. I see this "unisex" fragrance more as a creation for ladies, because it contains a lot of powdery, soft sweetness.

It goes very well with a grey autumn day with drizzle, when you are making yourself comfortable at home, with a pot of good Earl Grey with milk, with a wonderfully soft cashmere blanket - and listening to Santana. In my case however "Caravanserai" ...

In harmony with the soul
Oud by Reminiscence is a fragrance I always wear when I really want to feel good: it is a Sunday afternoon in November, the sky is cloudy and outside it is cold, the wind is relentlessly blowing the last leaves out of the trees. You sit on your couch, wrapped in a blanket. Reading a good book. Listen to music. Losing yourself in your daydreams. This is where that smell fits. It's like a good song or story or thought itself. There's something warm and cosy about it. It's personal and it brings you closer to yourself. To me it's a fragrance of pure harmony
Yeah, I'm a big fan of oud. But this oud is lovely, subtly surrounded by the flowery chords. You run your nose over your skin and want to sink into the scent. There's a perceptible class to it, a tremendous style. It smells high-class. Easily the tendency goes for me into the masculine, perhaps because of the spiciness and the very light smokiness. But beauty is something universal, and so I see it fully in man and woman.

So in short: Oud by Reminiscene is a beautiful, balanced, harmonious unisex scent.
Definitely a candidate for autumn and winter. Certainly the right choice in the context of romance and proximity. Whether for going out or for cuddling on the couch. In a sensual way it invites you to close your eyes and dream. If you are looking for a fragrance for your next business meeting, you should look elsewhere.
