Patina takes time to develop
I feel blessed to be one of the first in the U.S. to try this fragrance. I've been so eager to get a bottle since I learned about it and it finally arrived.

The name, "Patina", refers to a natural oxidation of color, with this visual being replicated onto the gorgeous flacon. Being an extrait de parfum, Patina has an oil concentration of 30% with a good longevity of around 7 hours. Sillage is quite high too - no complaints there.

Top notes hit me hard right away, with a spiciness that can be overwhelming. It took me some getting used to. This stinging spiciness gradually ebbs away to reveal the fruitier and overall sweeter tones, like hints of honey and vanilla, as well as the smell of scraping a fresh piece of bark from the rain forest. A sort of juiciness peeks through and remains steady throughout the rest of our time together.

Overall, this scented excursion awoke with a cloudy veil, overdosing on a rain of spices; but as the time and day went on, the sweeter skies opened up and this road ran parallel to the forest, with fruit and vanilla-honey scents traversing on cruise control.

Final thoughts: As a huge fan of Roberto Ugolini fragrances, this fragrance did not immediately capture me. However, as the name implies, with the right amount of time, the scent transformed into something more special to me.

Mango and amber - a great combination!
Fortunately, I had the opportunity to test this fragrance a few weeks ago at a meet and greet with Herbert Stricker. Herbert is really super friendly and it was very exciting to listen to him :)
But now I don't want to waste any more time and get to the fragrance:
The name patina refers to the aging of objects, which take on a different color or appearance over time. In the case of shoes, patina is usually also a sign that they have been owned for a particularly long time and have been well cared for and is therefore very positive. This is why the name Patina also fits well with Roberto Ugolini, as it was originally a shoe brand. The bottle is also inspired by the patina thanks to the color gradient.

The fragrance is basically a mango - amber scent. It starts with a sweet mango (it is made sweet by the honey), but it is not an extremely fruity, sweet mango, because it is also backed with cedar wood, which gives it a certain depth and "darkness". As the fragrance progresses, the mango is still present, but other notes such as guaiac wood and myrrh are added, which make the fragrance even darker. The base is then formed by a beautiful benzoin, vanilla, sandalwood base, which is really very well done.
The whole fragrance evokes a very pleasant, comforting feeling and is really lovely to smell.
Longevity and sillage are also top and in conclusion I can only say that this is a top release!

Another wonderful release from Roberto Ugolini
The bottle arrived today and after spraying it on, I was immediately captivated by the honey and mango notes When I went out for a walk, I noticed the scent the whole time. It smelled so warm and cozy. This fragrance accompanied me on my wrist during every activity today and I have to say that it has become more and more dear to my heart over time. The bad reviews are incomprehensible to me. I think this release is very strong and unique, just as a niche fragrance should be in my opinion.
The longevity is also great and I have to say that the fragrance benefits a lot from its playful mango finish. The later vanilla note paired with the sandalwood is something I have never smelled before. For me simply a very nice fragrance for the cold days.

No, I didn't misunderstand anything... the fragrance is simply nothing, Mr. Ugolini!
Anyone who knows my reviews knows that I try to be as honest as possible. After all, I pay for the things myself, so I can afford to be :) Well, a Souk colleague (Simi7r, THANK YOU!!!) sent me a sample of Patina this time, with the warning that it was nothing. Of course, I then did a bit of research to understand the story behind Patina; yes, and it sounds exciting with the process of ageing and maturity. But the implementation in the fragrance is daring, almost too daring.

Before I digress too much again, let's get into Patina :

- Well, the fragrance starts with a strong mango note, which somehow smells very green and fruity, but unfortunately also very synthetic from my point of view, almost penetrating. The honey joins in, but doesn't make the whole thing any better. This sweetness combined with the synthetic, overdosed mango note is simply not for me. Afterwards, a little wood is added, which balances the whole thing a little, but the woody accords with the powdery iris somehow don't find a harmony with the initial fruity-sweet DNA in my opinion. It seems - sorry for my choice of words - almost mutilated.

- As if that wasn't enough completely contrasting scents, the drydown adds a strongly ambery base, which is softened by an underlying sweetness of light vanilla and a well-intentioned creaminess of sandalwood. Yes, the fragrance does develop - as Patina promises as a concept - but I don't want to age like that, it's too much "mishmash and hiccup" for me, with the best will in the world. I understand that you want to be creative and that you want to develop from this youthful opening into a "mature man's fragrance", but it's just too much.

PS: Yes, the amber that is used is very minimally reminiscent of the amber in Amber Star, but this is far more coherent, of a higher caliber and better implemented; and above all not with this synthetic fruitiness in the background.

- The longevity and projection are both actually very good, above average in any case.

To summarize, I have to say: this will not be an Ugolini that will enter my collection. Not today, not in a hundred years. Don't get me wrong, maybe there will be some people who will celebrate the fragrance for their subjective perception and I respect that, but for me the whole thing is just too inharmonious and not very coordinated, rustic and simply thrown together and/or maybe I'm wrong and have too little creativity.

No matter what it is, I can't and don't want to wear it...

Great expectations, weak result
I had very high expectations when I heard that a new release from Roberto Ugolini was coming out. On paper, I still think the fragrance sounds very nice, which is why I ended up ordering it blind. When I put it on for the first time, I have to admit that I was really disappointed. My first association with the fragrance was definitely an old person and even after applying the fragrance several times I still wonder where the mango is to be found. Nevertheless, I have to say that the more often I apply the fragrance, the more I like the woody notes. In my opinion, however, it cannot be rated better than a 6.5. The longevity and sillage are good, and I can't say anything against that either. For the cold cold season, the fragrance could be quite good, but when else I would never come up with the idea to wear this fragrance. I would definitely advise against buying it blind.
