Jekyll and Hyde vanilla
Vaniglia is one of the few vanilla-centric vanilla perfumes I own, and to be honest, I am not sure why it became such a big part of my rotation over the summer other than the fact that my children, on their school holidays, blocked my access to my perfume collection with a rickety tower of soft toys. Since 1st September was the earliest I could yeet it off my summer tray into the deepest depths of my cupboard where it belongs, I decided to go ahead and review it.

Vaniglia is a Jekyll and Hyde vanilla. In the air, it smells like a scoop of artisanal vanilla gelato, thick with egg yolks and stiff with tiny, crackling particles of vanilla bean. People have accused Vaniglia of smelling a little like extract, which it does, except it is probably more accurate to say it smells like vanilla bean paste, which is woodier and has less of an alcohol shriek. The sillage is thick, unctuously creamy, and even a bit sticky or cloying. Like many of the richer Santa Maria Novella perfumes (Muschio, for example), there is a Biscoff undertone running through the lower register that strikes me as obscene in a perfume meant for grown-ups. But because there’s the slight bitterness of the booze in which the bean has been preserved, or a dusting of something cocoa-ish at the edges of this aroma, you do have that rather alluring (and yes, vanilla extract-like) contrast between the very expensive and the very cheap.

Smelled this way, I can take Vaniglia. It is a little disgusting in its biscuity foodiness, but since it has survived several collection culls, I obviously have some sort of feeling for it. Smelled up close, however – my God, what a shitshow. The vanilla eggnog thing completely disappears, replaced by the ugly aroma of melting plastic, which assaults the nostrils relentlessly for the first couple of hours. Given that Santa Maria Novella is one of the more traditional, and therefore, naturals-heavy brands, I will give the benefit of the doubt here and say that this is possibly an overdose of a latexy myrrh or an inherently plasticky jasmine material.

I am leaning towards the latter because this repulsive banana-plastic-acetone-industrial-fire aspect reminds me very much of Vanillary by Lush, another scent that burns my nose hairs when I get too close to it. My solution for Vaniglia is not to get too close to it.

More cocoa than vanilla
However, most commercially available chocolates contain vanilla flavoring as a secret ingredient, so in a sense all chocolate is vanilla flavored.
It smells like vanilla extract directly on the skin. In other words, it's not the scent of many other perfume brands. It doesn't smell like Dior or Chanel, for example. It's very natural, soft, and has a complex, rounded scent that comes from being natural. And since it's not a parfum, it's quite light. It also has a faint malty scent like wheat or bourbon. In any case, it smells like when you put edible liquor on your body, and there's nothing artificial about it. Even though it's cacao, it's very transparent and understated, so I think it's good for people who don't like designer fragrances. The scent is more subtle than I expected. To me, it smells a little like sandalwood incense from a distance. Or it's the same scent as when you open a bag of pure cacao and it tickles your nose. People who like Eau Duel will like it.

More sugar than vanilla
I'm still in a slight state of shock. I never expected to smell such a sweet vanilla scent. Actually it's sweeter than sweet, it smells almost like a bag of icing sugar.

It's hard to detect the vanilla in Santa Maria Novella's Vaniglia. It seems to be smothered by a variety of sweet accords; soft incense, sugary powder and banana lollies. If you're not looking for the perfect vanilla, then this fragrance is enjoyably different, but for vanilla lovers seeking vanilla in all its glory, this fragrance could be a disappointment.

In all honesty, I'm not a huge fan of the sugary and powdery opening, but I do like it once it reaches the heart. Vaniglia becomes increasingly spicier and smokier as it settles on the skin. Very unique in its approach and strangely sensual.

It's somewhat of an acquired taste in some ways. It's not something that I initially liked, yet the more I subject myself to smelling it, the more it grows on me. The spicy and musky accords really make Vaniglia an interesting experience on the skin. After five hours of wear, the scent is still there but very subtle, as you would expect from a cologne.

Throughout Vaniglia's development, I really didn't sense any strong vanilla accords, however I did smell it every now and then, lingering in the background, not necessarily wanting to be found. Sugar, spices, powder and smoky incense is a more realistic scent description.

Unsweet Vanilla
Under "I like," my profile lists vanilla as my first favorite note. Whether I truly like vanilla more than all other fragrance notes, I cannot say. I do enjoy many notes. However, a glance at my collection and the "Former" fragrances quickly reveals that vanilla holds a high place in my preferences.

There are so many differences when it comes to vanilla. From gourmand, often combined with fruity notes, to food-grade sweet, as often found in Comptoir Sud Pacifique, to beautiful orientals, vanilla loves to mix into the most diverse compositions. In combination with indolic flowers, it can even have an animalistic quality. At least for some noses.

My favorite vanilla is special. It is not the gourmand vanilla. The vanilla that I cherish as a perfect companion and with which I never feel perfumed, but rather completely connected, is a light oriental vanilla with a slightly spicier counterpart. This could be patchouli, it could be woody-resinous tones, a bit of smoke, or - and this is how I love it most - myrrh. I discovered this combination in Macadam by Il Profumo and fell head over heels in love. Of course, we also have patchouli and florals, but this wonderful bond that myrrh forms with vanilla here is a dream.

In Santa Maria Novella, I read that the fragrance notes consist solely of vanilla. However, the way this scent presents itself to me cannot be just vanilla that captivates me here. The scent is initially woodsy but becomes a little sweeter over time. I cannot identify any floral notes here. Just this wood tone, which I cannot specify further, vanilla, and something that reminds me of myrrh. When the scent has been on the skin for about 2-3 hours, it reminds me very much of Macadam, even though Vaniglia is much less sweet.

All gentlemen, but also ladies, who are always on the lookout for an unsweet vanilla scent, here it is. I have rarely sniffed a less sweet vanilla, and it is also such a beautiful one! After 3-4 hours, the base reveals itself, in which I recognize my beloved Muschio from the same brand. In the base, I believe musk clearly takes the lead.

The top note is unfortunately a bit of an acquired taste. This might be the only flaw that this wonderful scent has. My husband says he perceives a piercing note. I can confirm this, but this slight "pinch" does not bother me at all. It makes the scent special for me.

In the end, it probably won't be enough for a purchase, also because of Mr. Polly. But this Santa Maria Novella was able to sweeten not just my morning today, but my entire day. And in a completely unsweet way.

Many thanks to Susan, who always pulls treasures from her magic box that make me happy.

Vaniglia - calming and exciting at the same time
For a long time, I lingered around the brand Santa Maria Novella, but I couldn't quite decide which fragrance I wanted to get. By chance, I became aware of Vaniglia through a comment here, which otherwise would not have been my first choice. Fragrance description: Vanilla - nothing else... that can mean a lot, but such a soliflore (if it indeed smells like the flower) can also become boring. However, the comment piqued my curiosity, and I ordered it.

The shipping was incredibly fast, and after 4 days I already held the package in my hands.

The bottle is classically beautiful and understated, and the splash bottle comes with a kit to convert it into a spray bottle - I am a sprayer, so I used the spray attachment.

Now to the scent: Vaniglia is indeed simple and strikingly just VANILLA! However, saying it is JUST vanilla does not do the fragrance justice in any way. Here, the deep, balsamic scent of the vanilla orchid flowers flows towards me. And in an abundance reminiscent of a large vanilla climbing plant, laden with nectar-dripping blossoms. Warm, deep, slightly green, and overwhelmingly natural. The scent remains vanilla, although it develops towards vanilla pods. This means it becomes even warmer and more balsamic - anyone who has ever opened a package of real vanilla pods from Madagascar knows what I mean. Vaniglia presents vanilla in its natural form - this is not a squeaky, artificially exaggerated, loud vanilla. This is the complexity of the scent of natural vanilla - terribly simple, but terribly good! The scent seems light, but it is enduring. It is not a fragrance that constantly screams "HERE I AM! HEY, NOTICE ME, I WAS EXPENSIVE," but rather one of those scents that positively enhance my own scent. It does not annoy, and even in close contact, it does not "bite" the nose of the other person.
This scent calms me incredibly, and at the same time, it awakens positive spirits of life. It is gentle yet determined.
I can recommend it to anyone who likes natural scents that are not found everywhere - although you should like vanilla.

Sunny cool + zesty citrus opening. Lots of soft wood. Warm authentic vanilla with balsamic notes on musky fluff in the dry down.

Chocolate round in the Dax board. Vanilla serious, airy and non-sticky, the orchid on the table is distracting. Good approach, but still too edible.

Dimmed vanilla, not sweet in my opinion. I agree it's waxy. Ugly sprayer at SMN, doesn't fit in the box. Much nicer with a twist cap.

Very vintage, especially in the opening, soft in the progression, candle-waxy, balsamic. I don’t see it on young women, but it’s elegant.
