Ore by Slumberhouse

This is one of the best cocoa scents out there. Dusty, dry, and confident, it sits over a complex woody base with a dense, pervasive foundation. The chocolate note is rich, and will certainly not deprive you of your fix, but it's not exactly food-like or overly sweet. There's some dirt in the mix as well, a dry, baked earthiness that tempers any potential sweetness and keeps this from becoming a complete gourmand. The balance works very well and allows one to enjoy Ore's superb longevity, which easily spans 10 hours. Projection is about a foot from the body. Slumberhouse transitioned from Eau de Parfums to extraits about a year and a half ago, and the new extraits sit much closer to the skin. In my opinion, this is where they should be. They project, and they're strong, but they don't shout across the room. I would consider Ore best suited for low-key, casual situations or perhaps an intimate setting, during the fall and winter months. Easier to wear than you may think. Overall, it's an excellent fragrance and definitely worth investigating.

*Note: Some of the earlier reviews for this may be referring to the original EDP. That no longer exists and has been replaced by the extrait. The EDP was drier, dirtier, and more balsamic. It wasn't as smooth or well-constructed. In fact, it was a little chaotic. The extrait features a more prominent cocoa note, a smoother composition, and less challenging aspects than the EDP. In other words, most people will find the extrait more appealing

I felt definitely the same type of aroma from a bottle of fantastic Mozart liqueur, yet hesitated to categorize ORE as a gourmand perfume. Basically... I am even hesitating to call it perfume. It is much more.

Dusty, complex, as OGBuysblind diagnosed. Woody, yes. Cocoa’s presence is strong. Together with the weight of at least 500 years. Every little bit of this scent is so old! Dry woods, dried spices, dry and chopped lips of a wise old man, a kitchen in a house inhabited by many generations. Camp fire. Nature at night, with you sitting on a fallen tree trunk and calmly hearing the voices of the wonderful heather. Calm, but never soft. Could not be closer to the Earth.

Where is the sweetness of vanilla? Where is the graceful gaiac?
Does this special aroma come from dittany? From lactone?
Where was the creator, when this miracle was invented? Was ORE meant to be a talisman protecting a man during a night stroll? I believe, that no bad things can happen to a person wearing ORE. This is crazy, I know. But I will wear it to protect myself.

Richness of a gourmand magnified

One cannot over emphasise how rich this is at first. Full, rich, honeyed, benzoin-ish, balsamic labdanum-esque vanilla tones of a milky sweetness. There is a sharper woody note like cedar cutting through the sugar a little. It reminds me of chewing a stick of woodsy sugarcane after dipping it in mature Greek tree honey. There is a slightly malty edge to the sugar that isn't as far as caramel. It just sharpens this enough to act as brakes on the sugar overload. It is nearly sickly but doesn't quite go there.

As this progresses, the calorific side recedes and a powdery, lavender-ish woody note takes over. If I were a bee, then this would be what I was looking for in the flower. Honey fermented sugar with a floral nuance akin to a spicy carnation or green lavender on a molasses brown sugary wood.

I'm not a huge fan of a gourmand perfume, but if you're going to be sweet, go the whole hog with this. Don't spare the calories. It isn't my bag at all, but it is very well done, like a good alcoholic chocolate toffee eclair.

A Cocoa Gourmand

Yesterday, I finally was able to pick my Slumberhouse sample set from the customs office. This brand from Oregon is not very present in the European market so far. At least, they do not have lots of experience with deliveries abroad: the customs declaration was unreadable, so I had to go to the customs office and show them my Paypal invoice. Not easy if you have a 9 to 5 job.

Ore presents itself as a pure gourmand fragrance. It is all about cocoa, and this note is set right into the center of this fragrance. It is not dark chocolate such as the ones that seduce us to highly complex fragrances like Guerlains Arsène Lupin or the L'Instant perfumes. No, this is an instant cocoa drink, milky and sweet. I just can'believe that some people like to spray themselves with such notes. However, tastes are different.

At least the perfumer tried to prevent the worst by adding herbal and woody notes that are very ethereal. This is the way that also the perfumer Sigrun Steinhausen-Strobel from Parfum Privés successfully gets a grip on too opulent flowery or resinous notes.

Rudeness can only be answered with rudeness, and so Ore contains a lot of those ethereal notes. This saves the fragrance during the first two or three hours. At least, during some time you have the impression that something genuine has come out of this mélange. It could have been worse, and my averseness is definitely not against the perfumer and his abilities, only against this type of fragrances. I should have been warned: “Strange and unique perfumes” is the slogan of this brand! Now I am looking forward to test more from Slumberhouse, it can only become better fot me. I simply do not like Gourmands.

Ore can only be recommended to extreme fans of milk shakes. While waiting for delivery, I would recommend hot baths. Just add a pack of instant cocoa drink - it's healthy!

A theme played so many times before

Ore 2022 test drive:

The new version of Ore: it smells like a powdery, authentic and natural dessert cacao with a big oak soaked with whisky influence and a woody drydown. I like it, but I have scents in my collection that do the same job and are cheaper (at least one, discontinued though). I can easily see why would people love this one though.
