The little night watchman
What do you want under that mushroom? The owl was somewhat taken aback and put its head sideways into the forest floor so that it could spy the little night watchman with one eye. The earth was rampant moss and smelled musty and damp. A little way off, the wild grasses smoked from the rain, little clouds wafted through the forest, weathered the undergrowth with mild veils. I look the bluish glow of the juniper worms! Sounding almost sleepy, the little night watchman pulled his finger from his ear and smelled it, all in thought. Then he wrinkled his nose and pointed to the sky. See how warmly the ambers sparkle? Above all the dark green rotten moss flickered amber in the firmament, herb-sweet smouldering dark red down to the smoking grasses.
Along the balsam-dripping trees they watched streaks of sage-scented green-spice drift across the night sky, glimpsed distant fruity branches, sank deeper still into the mossy nest, breathing the nocturnal amber. The little night watchman smelled his fingers again. Why are you doing this? The owl's eyebrows drew together. Then the watcher replied, How else am I to bear all the beauty, the earth, the moss, the beauty of colors, the grass smoking amber sparkling, the balmy dark fir darkling, the green sagebrush creeping, the bright juniper worm glow?
Then the little night watchman sprinkled sandalwood incense dust in the warm wind, dipped everything in sepia tones, and after four or five silent hours the owl closed its eyes.
