A walk through the Mirkwood Woods
I feel like Aguru from TRNP is one of those hidden treasures in the artisanal realm. People who own it know very well how amazing it is but never speak about it, almost afraid that more enthusiasts will discover it. I stumbled upon it by chance, after trying quite a few from the house and not being particularly moved. This one really blew my socks off. I was lucky enough to get the last two in stock during the clearance sale and then another one in the aftermarket. It is a pain hunting it down. As I said, people know how good this is, they won't talk about it, never mind selling it. To me, it is a Holy Grail perfume, most definitely one of my favorites, and it boils down to two halves that are joined seamlessly. The vintage green chypre half, and the Oriental half, driven by Agarwood, of three different types to be specific. As I love both of these genres to death, it is easy to understand my love for Aguru. Between the strong green mossy hues and the leathery woody, brown ones, there are various bridge notes, such as labdanum, providing an extra leather-like quality, tobacco, ambrette seed for a bit of sweet delicate creaminess, and sandalwood to smooth out the edges and for extra texture. It starts off very green, like taking a bite in the mossy floor of a forest, only to raise your head and see this huge tree in front greeting you with its aroma. It moves away slowly from the piercing bitter green from the opening blast to a steady but surely more dense woody and leathery texture, drying down to a leathery oud-labdanum combo flanked by everlasting mossiness. The verdant qualities never go away. Therefore, it always feels like a green chypre, while at the same time feeling like a heavy oud perfume. That is why people who enjoy either of these two genres will find much delight here, and people who love both will find themselves close to Nirvana. The overall feel of wearing Aguru is really magical. I always think about The Lord of The Rings Saga, specifically the Mirkwood forest. I think if Tranduil had worn a perfume it would have been Aguru.
