AMBER ABSOLUTE by Tom Ford
Tom Ford worked with nose Christophe Laudamiel to create his Private Blend offering, Amber Absolute. Laudamiel has been the creative genius behind many successful names such as Estée Lauder, Harvey Nichols, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Thierry Mugler and Tommy Hilfiger.

Amber Absolute starts the show with an unbelievable frankincense opening, dense, gentle and smoky. At the heart, notes of amber and woods wiggle their way in. This fragrance truly develops into one of the best amber scents available. Amber Absolute has a fabulous burnt carmel accord that dominates the heart of this fragrance and is warm, smooth and inviting. The vanilla base is slightly sweet and very pleasing, giving Amber Absolute a creamy richness without being overly sweet or heady. The addition of Labdanum assists in balancing this fragrance, but not in the typical powdery finish. It is more luxurious and plays more of a supporting role for the dense amber structure. This is truly a opulent concoction.

A little goes a long way with Amber Absolute. Sillage is very good and longevity is amazing. This fragrance can still be going strong well over 15 hours after application. Like a fine wine, Amber Absolute only gets better with time. Please don't make any hasty decisions within the first hour or so. This fragrance needs time to develop for a full appreciation of its complexity. If you are a true lover of amber, this is a fragrance that you shouldn't live without.

A real treat!
Many have compared this one to SL Ambre Sultan. I suppose there are similarities in that both are intense amber frags with a good hit of spices. But where AS draws its sillage from honeyed undertones, AA goes for the booze.
I put it on and the depth is immediately emphasized with Cognac effluves, it's dizzying in a good way.
Less herbaceous than AS, this one goes for deep darkness, it is thick and dense but not syrupy or cloying.
And its longevity is off the charts!
Amber fans will appreciate this one.

I got 32 ounces of this for free and....
This for the past ~11 years has been the absolute greatest thing I had ever smelled, nothing could top it. MFK Grand Soir is excellent but it's not as good as this.

Right around when this was to be discontinued I went to Neiman Marcus and the SA working for TF told me they had several huge (1 liter / 33oz) bottles of this in the back. She told me if I brought a bottle in she would fill up whatever I wanted. I came back with two 16oz stainless steel bottle and she filled them both ( ty Rhianna).

Fast forward to a year ago, and I threw away a bag that contained 100+ old samples / decants including the 30ml remaining of AA that I had not sold. My only regret today is that I don't have that AA, I don't care about any of the other dozen items that have been discontinued, the Aventus 11z01 or 13z01 that were in that bag, only the AA....it was that good.

best amber on the market
Smokey, viscous amber that dries down into a sweet-resinous-smokey scent. This is deep, viscous, and rich - it smells like money (not literally) in a totally classy yet contemporary way.

Strong as anything - the sillage on this is ridiculous. It'll fill a room. Longevity is likewise 10+ hours, but in reality probably up to/more than 24 hours if you don't wash it off. Projection similarly beastly. Needless to say this is only suited to colder weather - and ideally when the sun has set!

Glorious Monolithic Amber
Hats off to Christophe Laudamiel for crafting what might be one of the most lavish interpretations of Amber ever bottled. A few years back, he publicly shared the formula on Instagram as a heartfelt tribute to a dear friend who had passed. And while the formula may appear deceptively simple, it’s a marvel of olfactory minimalism. Stripped down to only the most potent, impactful ingredients, it’s an exercise in raw power and restraint.

At the core lies a thunderous dose of Vanillin—over a quarter of the entire formula—anchored by a dense, creamy swirl of sandalwood-like synthetics like Bacdanol, Ebanol, Polysantol, and Javanol. It’s a scent architecture built not with bricks, but with tectonic plates. The “amber” isn’t just a note; it’s a towering presence, formed from a monolithic mass of Labdanum Resinoid, Cistus Absolute, Patchouli, Olibanum, and Ambreine.

Individually, these components might feel overwhelming or unbalanced. In most fragrances, Vanillin above 5% is a sugar bomb—here, it's restrained, counterbalanced by the musky, resinous heft of the other ingredients. It’s a delicate, volatile chemistry: too much Vanillin without grounding and you'd drown in sweetness; too much wood and it might veer into funky chaos. But Christophe finds perfect alignment, a true symphonic chord struck between light and dark, sweet and smoky, plush and primal.

Yes, the name says "Amber," and that’s exactly where the heart beats. Labdanum and Cistus bring out amber’s moody, feral, almost overripe complexity—sweet, spicy, smoky, balsamic. Ambreine deepens the natural ambergris vibe, while the sandalwood accord gives it a creamy, musky nest to rest in. The Patchouli layers on a dirt-kissed chocolate nuance, and Olibanum threads through it all with its cool, piney incense trail.

Then there’s the performance—absolutely beastly. We’re talking 24+ hours on skin, days on fabric (even if you never spray your clothes). It can be suffocating in heat, yet divine when the mercury drops—wrapping you in a vanillic amber haze that feels like wearing liquid gold.

I managed to snag a few decants before it vanished into the ether of discontinued greatness, and I count myself lucky. Fragrances like this are why I fell in love with perfumery in the first place. It’s not just a scent—it’s an experience. Like poetry, or music, it doesn’t ask for understanding—it demands surrender.

Well-balanced from the fruity, slightly tipsy start over the smoky-balsamic development to the powdery-resinous base. Great!

I usually can't stand sweet-vanillic fragrances but this is so intoxicating! Simply the best amber I've had to tried so far.

Top notes are surprisingly harsh with a bristly texture. Heart and base are steady, linear; resins and woods featuring fatty/waxy vanilla.
