Classy keeper

I gave up trying to understand why I like Essenza del Tempo so much. It doesn’t have anything groundbreaking, still it feels great and “special” to wear, much more than one may assume at first. It is a fresh-woody scent with a slight tomato note (or something equally sitting halfway leafy/greenish and juicy/bittersweet) and a crisp cedar-vetiver base with a dusty and warm amber-powdery feel, definitely smelling to close to some of nicest Hermès of the past years. That exact same “transparent citrus woodiness” is here too, classy as well, and quality as well. The difference is maybe a subtle feel of mellow, dusty warmth, the tepid sun of an Italian afternoon, with a sprinkle of spices and a hint of powdery musk adding some colour and thickness to the woody notes. But basically, it’s a fresh woody-ambery-powdery scent, just – for some reasons – incredibly warm, rich and extremely refined while keeping it subtle, discreet and refreshing. Close to skin (a tad too much, maybe), but classy as hell. The name translates into “essence of time”, and indeed it conveys a concept of suspension, of time lazily passing by in a dreamy sunny mood. Great quality. An underrated keeper.

Take a Time Out

A masculine cologne, with a soft sueded feel to it. Discrete but lingering and soothing to the senses.

This has grown on me more and more, I tend to go for this when feeling a bit rubbish as it never feels too much. It just quietly and discretely smells good.

The Deceleration Fragrance

What is the essence of time? There may be different answers to this philosophical question, but I presume, before finding such answers, the simple awareness of time should be required. How can one become aware of time? I think we become aware if something disturbs our usual time flow. Good events can make us aware by giving us the feeling that time goes by much faster, and the bad ones make time pass by agonisingly slow. Besides that, a simple distraction in our daily routine can make us think about time – even if its just the 2 seconds that one needs to look at the watch.

Can a perfume distract ones usual time flow? Probably yes, especially if the fragrance makes you stop whatever you are doing once in a while, and instead sit down and sense the fragrance. Perfumes that have a calming effect may be counted in – whenever they slow you down the difference to your usual pace will be visible.

Essenza del Tempo is like a cup of tea that you have during your morning break. It invites you to reflect on your current “tempo” and think twice about it. Having said this, Essenza del Tempo is a wonderfully charming, discreet and calming fragrance. I remember when I bought it four years ago, there were ads indicating that essences of rose hip and/or hibiscus went into it (I cannot remember which), and indeed, a kind of rose hip tea accord is the core of it - forget the fragrance pyramid! This fits perfectly into the concept of slowing down things: rose hip and hibiscus make a wonderful red tea for the evening.

For some reason, Essenza del Tempo does not seem to be too successful. It is far from being gaudy and spectacular, and as usual, the silent fragrances do not easily find their audience. Also, Essenza del Tempo is not a sophisticated niche fragrance. You may find some perfume chain store notes in it as well – such as a dry amber. However, the composition is brilliant – which compensates for it.

I like Essenza del Tempo for its discreetness and the feeling of contentment that it can provide. It is a good wear on any lazy day, but also a counterpart if things become stressful. Besides that, there are not many fragrances with a hibiscus and rose hip appeal. The nearest relative of Essenza del Tempo known to me, with a similar character, would be Annick Goutal's Mandragore.

If you should come across Essenza del Tempo, please do not test it along with other, stronger fragrances. You might miss its beauty.
