Fruity floral with a twist

I must admit I first thought Donna was another trendy sweet fruity floral fragrance. A tangy blackcurrant meets a creamy jasmine on a comforting wood and vanilla base…If this description sounds nice to you, you’ll love Donna at fist sniff. If you’re expecting more than this, you’ll just have to let the fragrance reveal its deepest secrets : a shower of pink pepper glitter rains on the creamy flowers, making them morph into a nice cup of jasmine green tea. The woody base has also a magical trick up its sleeve, it unfolds surprising soft pencil shaving notes. No wonder this long lasting contemporary accord is so popular !

Let's go shopping

I worked at Sephora from 2020-2022 and I have few (if any) fond memories of working during both the pandemic and also the holiday season. I watched a woman wrestle a Dior Sauvage from the hands of an elderly shopper before making a break for the door and not stopping until she reached the Auntie Annie's pretzel stand at the far end of the hallway. It was like a daring bank robbery except it was in our deteriorating mall and her mask had slipped under her nose and I hadn't seen daylight or tasted air in many hours. This was the same day someone's child flushed three tampons down our employee toilet and we lost our bathroom for a week and had to use the creepy bathroom in the hallway behind footlocker.
Anyway, when I wear Valentino Donna Born in Roma, I don't think of Italy or high fashion or even the gorgeous bottle this perfume came in when I got it in gratis. I think of watching that woman sprinting down the darkened hallway, Mariah Carey All I Want for Christmas is You playing at top volume, my arms full of products to be put out. I think of that woman and her Gucci slides, running for the freedom of the parking lot, Sauvage in hand. I think of the snow falling gently onto black heaps of frozen ice, my ten minute break, and the blissful oblivion of a day off that would never come.

Fruity vanilla

This scent opens up very fruity and bright and dries down to a very sweet and slightly woody vanilla, while still keeping that fruitiness all throughout its performance. It is one of my signature scents because it just smells so pretty and feminine but in a very fun and youthful way. It kinda smells like a more complex and refined version of Sol de Janeiro's Cheirosa 40 to me. It is also a huge compliment-getter and overall very crowd-pleasing.

Climax

Born In Roma is a sleeper fragrance. It opens uninterestingly, with a bland haze of fruity aroma chemicals; followed by prickly jasmine. I have yet to identify when this occurs, but at some point in route to the final phase there is a beautiful transformation. Now, for the "why". The bourbon vanilla really takes time to warm up on the skin before it's noticed, as it is temporarily overshadowed by cashmeran. The jasmine tea accord in combination with the base notes create this effect that in time, makes Born In Roma very attractive. Many fragrances are surrounded by hype and don't deserve the attention they receive, but I do enjoy this on a woman. Born In Roma is a movie with a monotonous start and a climax that leaves you with something to talk about.

inoffensive but generic

i don’t have much to say about this one. it’s nice, but kind of just smells like sephora or ulta to me. fruity floral with some extra sweetness from the vanilla. heavy on the black currant and jasmine. i wish i got the jasmine tea note. it’s pleasant but a bit bland, i can’t see this offending anybody.
