The nineties. My favorite time, as far as fragrances are concerned. What was launched at that time, all appealed to me. Of course, not everything always necessarily positive, but it almost never happened that I had no opinion about a fragrance. Why Birmane by van Cleef & Arpels completely passed me by, I unfortunately don't know. Probably because he was simply not long enough on the market.

After my test today I ask myself once again the same question as so often. Why, for heaven's sake, you put something like that?

Birmane is classified here as fruity-floral, which makes me yawn at first sight. One thinks of fragrances, as they are nowadays in abundance on the designer shelf and beautiful brands such as Armani, Joop, Lancome & Co, for my personal taste at least, a little bit messed up. However, what comes here from the little sprayer, which the dear Andrula has packed me with, is different.

Had I tested the fragrance blindly, I would have the pineapple, which was probably already popular in the late nineties, think for example of fragrances like Yamamoto Yohji or the wonderful Route66 for men by Coty, not necessarily recognized as such. My first thought was peach, and I quickly realized why I felt that way: Birmane in the EdP concentration is partly based in top, heart and base notes on Givenchy's classic Amarige, launched eight years earlier, and that one has quite a bit of peach in the opening and no pineapple. The tangy, fruity opening clearly reminds me of Amarige, which was also once part of my collection. In the heart, Birmane becomes softer, more airy. The heliotrope note always remains delicate and never brings too much sweetness or even tropical impressions into play. Rose and orchid show are delicately floral and cuddly. In the base, the fragrances are pretty much the same again, even though Amarige has a few more scents up its sleeve in addition to musk, sandalwood, tonka bean and vanilla. I would have actually mistaken this beautiful van Cleef & Arpels fragrance for a flanker of Amarige if I didn't know better, which is what I'm testing here.
It expresses its beauty in its gentle way, and this is where it differs from its big sister from Givenchy. Where Amarige is loud, Birmane is a bit more shy. The florals dominate this delicate fragrance from start to finish in a lovely, clean-soapy way. Very neat smelling, this little treasure never makes me think of cheap shower gels or the like, which happens to me a lot with current fruity-florals. Oriental hints can be sniffed out, but they are very finely balanced. Birmane is not a Wummser, but a fine spirit.

And a third thank you to the lovely Andrula for her wonderful little fine sample package. It was a lot of fun, my dear.
