Classy and masculine

Versace Pour Homme Oud Noir is both the best of the line and the most underrated one, it’s no surprise that it didn’t sell as well as the original and Dylan Blue, because it’s a refined, mature and subdued fragrance from a brand that’s more known for being youthful and attention grabbing these days. Versace buyers aren’t looking for a fragrance for the hairy chested man, and those men aren’t buying Versace.

I happen to enjoy it a lot, it’s my woody spicy fragrance for winter in my collection mostly consisting of gourmands. The first thing you get is dry and rindy citrus mixed with spices, which smoothly transitions into resinous woods and saffron, the blend is actually quite smooth for Versace, which is rarely the case for them.

The smell is super appealing, it has a mysterious and slightly off putting quality mixed with very crowd pleasing designer sensibilities, it’s super easy to pull off but it’s not boring or devoid of personality. The only thing that could be a bit disappointing is the performance. This is not a beast, it projects very moderately and most of its duration is as a skin scent. I happen to like that in a fragrance, especially one more suited to special occasions, but if you’re looking for a beast mode fragrance this is not it.

It’s a shame Versace discontinued this, it’s left a hole in their catalogue that’s not currently being occupied by anything. I wish Versace would put this level of craft and refinement in more of their fragrances, we can only imagine what the flankers for this one could’ve smelled like.

If you happen to come across a bottle of this for a good price and you like something that’s elegant, masculine, modern and sexy for the fall and winter then it’s a good choice, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to grab one because there’s obviously similar scents out there.
