Nuts about my Nuts
BTSO Nuts is an impressive creation that closely mirrors the character of DS & Durga Pistachio, thanks to its shared core of pistachio, almond, vanilla and patchouli. The resemblance is striking, yet Nuts introduces its own personality with a sweeter opening, where caramel, rum and honey gently linger in the air before fading almost imperceptibly on the skin.

Unlike Les Nobles Essences Mirage Gourmand, a full-bodied gourmand from the same perfumer, Nuts avoids veering into overly sweet or “foodie” territory. Instead, it strikes a sophisticated balance, making it a 100% unisex fragrance that anyone can wear confidently. This versatility aligns perfectly with my personal preference for gender-neutral scents.

The subtle presence of tobacco and sesame in the background adds depth without overwhelming the composition - a welcome restraint, as tobacco and coffee notes in some fragrances can dominate and disrupt harmony.

The projection and longevity are impressive. I only used a single spray on my wrist when I first unboxed it and even after three hours, I could still detect the syrupy notes lingering in the air and the nutty nuances on my skin. Hours later, the delicate skin scent continued to tease my nose, making me want to keep sniffing my wrist.

IMHO, Nuts is effortlessly adaptable, suitable for any time of day and any season, making it a valuable addition to any collection. My only wish? A 100ml bottle at this price point would feel more justified.

Nice nutty mostly-gourmand, smoothed out during dry down
Sampling Borntostandout Nuts (formerly Happy Nuts, as best I can tell), a fittingly nut-led blend that has a syrupy sweet quality mixed with a heady sharpness via the combination of the pistachio and almond, two of the sharper nutty notes in fragrance, though both the sweetness and sharpness become toned with time as the fragrance dries down, becoming a bit more of a sturdy gourmand than something too edgy. Other notes include woods, spices, and other gourmand elements like caramel and vanilla. It’s tender and has an aromatic component that gives it an air of sophistication while still being a mostly-gourmand. It’s likely among my few favorites of the house while not being an amazing standout, not quite having the effect of Drunk Maple, for instance, but I quite like it and it performs well.

Like the rest of the line, this is EDP concentration and pried at $210 for 50ml, available in the US via boutiques like Ministry of Scent.

A Truly Happy Little Nut
The name of the fragrance really says it all:

From the very first spray, I was overwhelmed by a strong almond-pistachio note that reminded me of all sorts of delicacies. A mix of marzipan and amaretto describes it best.

The top note lasts quite a while, and then the scent slowly develops into a wonderfully creamy, non-intrusive base dominated by tonka bean.

A truly delicious gourmand, perfect for cold days.

Nut Twilight
Summer 1997, a tent sleepover party at my friend Manu's.
Manu had very liberal parents who were not bothered by the various bottles of Berentzen's milk liqueur range and some examples of a well-known Irish toffee liqueur making their way into the orchard. After all, we were all confirmed already.

Dear Josy was absolutely thrilled and dove in wholeheartedly. She wanted to throw all inhibitions overboard that evening and finally land with Christoph. She poured the sweet, sticky stuff into herself as if there were no tomorrow. Christoph seemed quite taken with it and followed her lead.

At some point, he had the idea to mix Josy a delicious long drink: Baileys with apple juice. I watched with interest, but from a safe distance, as the mixture formed funny flakes and didn't look particularly appetizing in color. However, Josy was undeterred and drank with reckless abandon what Cupid had offered her.

At some point, she got up from her cross-legged position. Her complexion had changed. Not necessarily for the better. She now resembled the pale beige-green of the previously consumed mixed drink. Instead of heading to the bathroom, Josy took a big lunge toward my brand-new igloo tent. She quickly went down on her knees, and at that moment, a sweet-sour torrent of her stomach contents poured onto the previously immaculate bright blue tent wall. I will never forget that smell. Thanks again, dear Josy!

With the arrival of Happy Nuts, I could now relive this wonderful moment of my youth in all its olfactory glory. Happy Nuts is a conglomerate of all sorts of gourmand notes that seem so arbitrary and disharmonious that I am at a loss for words. I smell nothing nutty, or at least nothing I could associate with pleasant nut scent. A piercingly artificial ethyl maltol sweetness accompanies this impenetrable dessert puree. So far, so bad. If it weren't for the patchouli and tobacco that also fell into the mix, which give it a certain dull acidity that catapults me straight back to 1997. Fermented chocolate sweetness. The scent is absolutely unbearable for me, and it would be highly uncomfortable if someone smelled like this.

No nuts for Cinderella.

It's like a dinner at a fancy chocolatier. Once we past the sweet oily opening, we're treated to a truly smooth and blissful experience.

Boozy, nutty opening. Settles into a creamy powdery scent on the dry down. Beware of the synthetic sweetness (a BTSO DNA signature).

Sweet pistachio! This is a decadent nutty dessert, served at a Michelin star restaurant. This is an elevated gourmand, not a sickly sweet.

Scratchy ethyl maltol gourmand of the kind: 1 spray, never touched again. Indefinable fermenty-rancid dessert buffet. Aggressive & overly sweet.
